Baseball Sweeps Series at Penn St.-DuBois to Open Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

DUBOIS, PA – The Keuka College Baseball team took all three games of their season opening series against hosts Penn St.-DuBois.

The Green and Gold won the first game on Friday night 7-2. They then defeated the Lions 8-7 in 10 innings and 2-1 on Saturday to complete the sweep.

Keuka College (3-0) will be packing their bags. Their next game will be Thursday, March 24 as they take on Lawrence University in Auburndale, Florida.

Game 1

Jake Redding helped set the table for the Keuka offense. The sophomore centerfielder went 1-1 at the plate, but was on base all six times, working five walks. He stole three bases and scored a pair of runs. Senior Brett Fenton went 2-4 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs.

On the mound, Kyle Michaud was the opening day starter for the Green and Gold and threw well. He struck out four in his five innings of work. The senior allowed only four hits and two runs in earning the win. Ryan Lawrence and Dakota Skinner combined for four innings of scoreless relief work, striking out five Lions.

Game 2

On Saturday, Keuka used a four-run sixth inning to take the lead before the Lions tied it and forced extra innings. Kyle Dailey and Dave Nuzzo had back-to-back pinch hit appearances in the sixth and both produced. Dailey had a pinch hit, two-run double to tie the game at the time. Nuzzo followed that up with a pinch hit RBI single, scoring Dailey to give Keuka the lead.

Penn St.-DuBois threatened to walkoff in the seventh, but reliever Thomas Fowler got the strikeout to strand a runner at third base. The game would remain tied until the 10th inning. Keuka plated a pair of runs with the ultimate winning run being scored by Justin Torres on a Billy McDermott sacrifice fly.

The Lions got one run back but Fowler once again stranded a runner at third base with a strikeout to end the game. The senior went 4.2 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out a career-best seven to earn the win for Keuka.

Game 3

The final game of the series was a classic pitchers dual that featured just five hits a side. Keuka got on the board in the fifth inning. Justin Torres singled, as did Jake Redding. They then both moved up to second and third when the left fielder mishandled Redding's hit. They both scored on an RBI single by Billy McDermott.

James Matthews started for Keuka and earned the win for the Green and Gold. The senior went four shutout innings, allowed just three hits, and struck out four batters. Kevin Franz entered in the fifth inning. Although he allowed a run, he surrendered just two hits in the final three innings of the game to earn the save, the first of his career.
