HORSEHEADS, N.Y. — Keuka College junior
Evan Cuba hit for the second cycle in program history as the Wolves rallied late and then won it in the 10th inning, defeating Elmira College 9-8 in an Empire 8 Conference game on Tuesday afternoon.
Cuba had four hits for Keuka College (5-12, 1-6 Empire 8) with a single, a double, a triple, and a home run. He drove in four runs for the Wolves and scored a pair himself. He even contributed a stolen base for the Wolves.
Nate Hill also had a big game for the Wolves with three hits, including a pair of doubles. Hill scored three runs and drove in one.
Alex Evans and
Derek Novicki each added a pair of hits in the win.
Keuka College 9 at Elmira College 8 (10 innings)
The Wolves wasted no time taking the lead on Tuesday at Elmira.
Alex Evans led off with a single, and
Nate Hill followed with a double. Evans scored on a groundout by Novicki. Hill came home as
Evan Cuba tripled to right field. He scored on a sacrifice fly by
Dan Mrowinski as the Wolves took a 3-0 lead.
Elmira pulled one back in the second, but the Wolves quickly answered in the third as
Derek Novicki walked. Cuba came to the plate and drove it over the left centerfield wall for a two-run home run to make it 5-1.
The Wolves added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by
Derek Novicki, but the Soaring Eagles matched it with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Elmira chipped away at the lead with two in the fifth and then overtook the Wolves with four in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead.
The lead was pulled back a half inning later as the Wolves scored two in the eighth.
Grady Kessler delivered a pinch-hit single for Keuka and then stole second. After moving to third on a wild pitch, he scored on a two-out double by
Nate Hill. Hill came home one batter later as Keuka tied the game at 8-8.
Neither team threatened late as the game would go to extra innings. The Wolves rallied with two outs in the tenth.
Nate Hill and
Derek Novicki had back-to-back singles to leave runners on the corners.
Evan Cuba then stepped up and completed the cycle with a single to score Hill and give the Wolves a 9-8 lead.
Elmira got a leadoff walk, looking to tie the game. After a groundout, they attempted to steal second, but
Owen Garvey threw out the runner.
Liam Eshelman then shut the door with a strikeout as Keuka got their first conference win of the season.

- The Wolves broke the series tie with Elmira through 24 games. Keuka College now has a 12-11-2 all-time record against the Soaring Eagles
- Dating back to last season, the Wolves have won three straight extra-innings games
- Evan Cuba joins John Rizzo '18 as the only Keuka College players to hit for the cycle. Rizzo completed the feat against Juniata College in 2018
- Luis Rivera got the start on the mound for the Wolves. The first-year went six innings, striking out three
- Ryan Schur, Jr. earned the win on the mound going three innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three
- It was the second save of the season for Liam Eshelman
- The Wolves were running against Elmira. Alex Evans had a pair of stolen bases. Keuka had five total as a team
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves remain in conference play this weekend against Russell Sage College. Keuka will host Sage on Friday at a location to be determined. The Wolves and Gators will then square off in a conference doubleheader on Saturday at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua.
