Box Score 2 The Keuka College baseball team salvaged a split of Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader with D'Youville College, winning game one 9-1 before falling 4-0 in the nightcap in Houghton, N.Y.
Keuka falls to 4-13 on the year, while D'Youville's record is 2-8.
Freshman Ryan Lawrence (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) improved to 2-1 with a dominant performance in the opener. Lawrence, a left-hander, allowed one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in earning the complete-game win.
Senior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, junior Kyle Dailey (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) had a two-run triple and finished with three RBI, and freshman Joe Marasco (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) added a two-run double to lift the Wolfpack to the win in game one.
Junior Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) and freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) each added RBI for the Green and Gold, who out-hit the Spartans 10-5.
D'Youville took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the second, but Keuka pulled even in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, McDermott walked, Borchert singled and Bowie reached on an error to load the bases.
Dailey reached on an error to plate McDermott with the tying run, but Keuka was retired on a fly out to end the threat.
Lawrence retired the side in order in the third before the Wolfpack pushed across two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) led off with a single and stole second base. Senior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) walked, but Anthony Oliveri retired the next two batters before McDermott and Borchert had back-to-back RBI singles for a 3-1 lead.
Lawrence again retired the Spartans in order in the fourth before Marasco extended the lead to 5-1 with a two-out, two-run double that scored Fenton and Dailey in the bottom of the inning.
The Wolfpack broke the game open thanks to a four-run fifth inning. McDermott led off with a walk and scored on an RBI double by Borchert. Bowie knocked home Borchert with an RBI single, and after Bowie stole second, he scored on Dailey's RBI triple for an 8-1 lead.
On the triple, Dailey scampered home thanks to an error to conclude the scoring as Keuka snapped its five-game losing streak.
In game two, Burachalk was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, and sophomore Robert LaRue (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) added a single, but Keuka was out-hit 10-3 in the loss.
D'Youville took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Kyle Taylor in the third, and Travis Macrides, Nick Stimpfel and Thomas Brummer each had RBI singles in the fourth as the Spartans took a 4-0 lead.
Keuka was held hitless in the fourth and fifth innings, but mounted a comeback attempt in the sixth. With two outs, Burachalk laced a double and Marasco walked to put runners on first and second, but a pop out ended the inning, and the Spartans hung on for the split.
Freshman Ryan Caroway (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings.
Freshman Kevin Franz (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) allowed three hits with two strikeouts and no walks in 3 2/3 effective innings of relief work for the Green and Gold.
Keuka hits the road Saturday and Sunday for a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheaders. The Wolfpack play at Penn State-Abington at 1 p.m. Saturday, and are at defending NEAC champion Penn State-Berks at noon Sunday.
