Women's Lax Hangs with Mount Union Before Falling in NCAA's

Box Score

While the Keuka College women's lacrosse team didn't win Wednesday's first-round NCAA Division III tournament contest against Mount Union (Ohio), the Storm gave the Purple Raiders a game in the first half before falling 16-5 in Alliance, Ohio.

Senior Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) capped her stellar career with three assists, breaking her own record for points and assists in a season, while junior Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added two goals for Keuka College, making its second straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Senior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton), junior Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) and freshman Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) each added goals for the Storm, who improved from their first NCAA appearance, when they suffered a 23-2 setback to SUNY Cortland.

Senior Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) made nine saves and classmate Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had 5 groundballs, 4 draw controls and 3 caused turnovers as Keuka College (16-3) set a school record for most wins in a season.

Bonafede finished with 102 points (four more than in 2013) and 71 assists (two more), but it wasn't enough as Mount Union snapped the Storm's 14-game win streak and advanced to take on SUNY Cortland, the nation's top-ranked team, Saturday in the second round.

Smith also set single-season records for groundballs (105) and draw controls (132), while her 67 goals were third-most in a season.

Emily Sendker (five goals, one assist) scored two goals 19 seconds apart as the Purple Raiders, in their second varsity season, took a 2-0 lead 2:30 into the contest.

Bonafede fed Arancio for a goal to slice the deficit in half 47 seconds later, but Sendker scored her third goal to stake Mount Union to a 3-1 lead with 24:18 remaining in the first half.

Bonafede found Burt for a goal 45 seconds later to pull the Green and Gold within one, but the Purple Raiders scored twice on free-position shots to take a 5-2 lead with 17:50 remaining before halftime.

Maguire countered with a free-position shot of her own 43 seconds later as the two high-octane offenses scored eight goals in the first 13 minutes.

Mount Union would score two more goals for a 7-3 lead before Bonafede fed Burt for a man-up tally with 9:06 remaining that pulled the Storm within 7-4.

But Katherine Doraty (five goals, one assist) pumped in two goals and Sendker added her fourth goal of the opening half as Mount Union led 10-4. Bruno scored an unassisted tally with 1:33 remaining in the first as the Storm went into halftime down 10-5.

Neither school scored during the first eight minutes of the second half, but Mount Union would outscore the Green and Gold 6-0 in the second to earn its first-ever NCAA win in women's lacrosse.

Bonafede capped her career with school-records for points (307) and assists (202), while Smith finished her career as the all-time leader in goals scored (202), groundballs (243) and draw controls (290) and was second to Bonafede in points (238).
