Box Score Junior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) drove in three runs as the Keuka College baseball team earned a share of the North Eastern Athletic Conference's (NEAC) regular-season championship after knocking off Penn State-Berks 9-1 Sunday on Senior Day at Kuhl Field in Keuka Park, N.Y.
Burachalk was 3-for-4 with a double, senior Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI and sophomore Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base for the Storm (21-11, 12-6 NEAC).
Keuka College completed the three-game sweep of Berks (15-18, 11-7) to finish tied with Gallaudet (D.C.) University (25-15, 12-6) atop the NEAC standings. The Bison from Gallaudet will host the NEAC's postseason tournament after Gallaudet took two of three from the Storm April 26-27.
Gallaudet is the No. 1 seed, Keuka College is the No. 2 seed, Berks will be the No. 3 seed and SUNYIT (16-17, 10-8) is the No. 4 seed. The double-elimination tournament runs Friday through Sunday at Hoy Field in Washington, D.C.
The Green and Gold will make their first appearance in the NEAC tournament since the 2009 season.
"I think it's a huge honor to share the NEAC regular-season championship," said Rick Ferchen, Keuka College's first-year coach.
"My goal was just to get into the NEAC tournament, but to share the title was something I didn't expect. These student-athletes exceeded my expectations and I'm very honored and proud to be their coach. This is a nice accomplishment and (winning all three with Berks) gives us both a lot of momentum heading into NEAC's, and also the belief that they can beat anybody in the NEAC tournament."
Seniors Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Dave Goetz (Kirkwood, NY/Windsor) each drove in a run, as did juniors Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Tommy Drumm (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and Dan Smith (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks).
Seniors Patrick Campbell (Avon, NY/Avon) and Greg Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) combined on the six-hitter. Campbell earned the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings pitched, while Starks allowed no runs on three hits with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
After Berks scored on an error in the first, it was all Green and Gold. Burachalk plated a pair of runs with his RBI single to the gap in left-center field in the bottom of the inning, and Borchert extended the lead to 3-1 on a third-inning groundout.
Drumm added a run on a sacrifice bunt and Schuck dropped an RBI single into center field for a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning, and Smith plated a run on a sacrifice fly and Goetz added an RBI double in the fifth for a 7-1 lead.
The Storm tacked on a run in the seventh on a groundout, and added a run in the eighth on a fielder's choice from Corbin.
Before the game, The Storm honored seniors Campbell, Corbin, Goetz, Schuck, Starks, Dylan Campbell (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson), Dom D'Augustino (Williamson, NY/Williamson), Brandon Jacobs (Walworth, NY/Gananda), Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott), Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) and Jeremy Pyszczynski (Alden, NY/St. Mary's) for their hard work and dedication to the baseball program.
