Women's Lax Stays Red-Hot in Win over St. Elizabeth

Box Score

Seniors Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) each scored eight points and the Keuka College women's lacrosse team blanked the College of St. Elizabeth (N.J.) for the final 51 minutes as the Storm earned a 20-2 triumph Friday afternoon in Morristown, N.J.

Smith scored six goals with two assists while Bonafede added four goals with four assists to power the Storm (9-2, 5-0 NEAC), who remained in first place in the NEAC with four conference clashes remaining.

Smith, a three-time All-NEAC midfielder, upped her career goals total to 177 and is just four goals away from breaking Brandy Shafer's (2008-11) career scoring mark of 180 goals.

Freshman Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) added two goals with two assists while senior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) and juniors Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) each scored two goals for the Storm.

It was Bonafede's fourth eight-point game this year, and Smith's first time with eight points.

Smith also collected 11 groundballs while Maguire picked up eight groundballs and freshman Sydney Forshay (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) collected five groundballs as the Storm had 42 groundballs. Maguire won 12 draw controls as the Storm won 58.3 percent of the draw controls (14 of 24).

Smith scored an unassisted tally 3:08 into the first half, but the Screaming Eagles (1-8, 1-5 NEAC) got back-to-back goals from Kelly O'Dell and Nicole Rios to lead 2-1 with 21:39 remaining in the opening half.

Neither team would score again until Bonafede fed Burt with 7:27 remaining to knot the score at two apiece. That was the start of an 8-0 run to close out the half, as Smith pumped in three goals, Burt scored twice and Arancio, Bonafede and Maguire each added goals as the Green and Gold took a 9-2 lead into halftime.

Bonafede added three second-half goals and Bruno and Smith each scored twice as the Storm blanked St. Elizabeth 11-0 in the second half.

Thanks to a stingy defense, led by juniors Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) and Anna Patton (Newark, NY/Newark) and freshmen Maura Gosson (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) and Taylor Willsey (Mexico, NY/Mexico), the Storm clamped down and held St. Elizabeth to just five shots while committing 21 turnovers.

Senior Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) made two saves to improve to 9-2.

The Storm travel to Penn State-Abington for a 1 p.m. clash Saturday afternoon.
