Box Score 2 Sophomore pinch-hitter Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) delivered an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning and senior Jeremy Pyszczynski (Alden, NY/St. Mary's) threw a complete-game, eight-hitter as the Keuka College baseball team picked up a 4-3 win in game two to salvage a split of Sunday's doubleheader with Penn State-Altoona.
Pyszczynski allowed two earned runs while striking out four as the Storm improved to 2-2.
Keuka dropped the opener, 10-8 before earning a split after some late-game heroics. Tied at three entering the sixth, senior Dave Goetz (Kirkwood, NY/Windsor) hit a leadoff single and freshman pinch-runner Robert Larue (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) took second base on a passed ball. McDermott followed with an RBI single to left-center field to give Keuka a 4-3 lead.
Pyszczynski held Altoona (5-10) without a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Keuka was retired without a run in the top of the seventh. Pyszczynski allowed a leadoff single in the seventh, but with the tying run on first Keuka turned a game-ending double-play to earn the split.
Keuka won despite committing four errors and managing only four hits.
Junior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) put the Storm up 1-0 on an RBI groundout in the first, but Altoona tied the score on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning. Altoona took a 2-1 lead into the third inning before junior Keith Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Ave Marie University) walked, stole second and scored on an error.
With two outs, junior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) singled through the left side of the infield, plating senior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) for a 3-2 lead.
Altoona tied the game on another RBI groundout in the third, and neither team threatened until the Storm scored the go-ahead run in the sixth.
In the opener, senior Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) drove in a pair of runs and McDermott and Borchert each added two hits for Keuka, which led 8-7 before Altoona pushed across three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win.
Borchert, Corbin, senior Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) and junior Dan Smith (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) each drove in runs for the Green and Gold.
Borchert got the Storm on the board in the first. With one out, McDermott dropped a single into left field and Burachalk followed with a single through the right side of the infield. Borchert then plated Burachalk on a run-scoring double and Corbin added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
The Storm's lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth inning. After Corbin reached on an error, he stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on McVannan's RBI single back up the middle. McVannan then scored an unearned run on an Altoona error.
Altoona answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning before Keuka tied the game at 5 in the sixth. Smith hit a double to right-center field, moved to third on a double from senior pinch-hitter Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) and Smith scored on an RBI groundout from Schuck.
Altoona surged to a 7-5 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth before the Storm took an 8-7 lead with three runs in the seventh. Burachalk walked and Borchert and Corbin each singled to load the bases with nobody out.
McVannan reached on a throwing error, scoring Burachalk, and after Smith reached on a fielder's choice, both Corbin and Borchert scored on the play, which included a throwing error as the Storm took an 8-7 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Altoona tied the game on an RBI single and then delivered a walk-off, two-out, two-run home run for the win.
The Storm are on the road for the first 19 games, including Monday's doubleheader at Valley Forge Christian. The first game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
The Green and Gold's home opener is against the Southern Vermont April 9.
