Baseball Trio Named All-Empire 8

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — A trio from the Keuka College Baseball team was honored on Tuesday, being selected to the All-Empire 8 All-Conference Teams by the conference's coaches.

Senior RJ Murphy earned his third all-conference honor, being named an Empire 8 First Team Catcher. Carlos Fantauzzi was named to the second team as an outfielder, and first-year student-athlete Lucas Gilbert was named Second Team All-Empire 8 as a relief pitcher.

RJ Murphy earned his second consecutive First Team selection at catcher and third honor of his career. He becomes the first Keuka College Baseball player to earn back-to-back first-team all-conference honors since Jake Burachalk '15 in 2014 and 2015. Murphy hit over .300 on the year for the Wolves. He added 15 extra-base hits with nine doubles, three triples, and a pair of home runs. Murphy drove in 27 runs and scored 22 himself. The senior finished his career with 106 hits and a .292 batting average. He ranks in the career top ten lists for doubles, triples, runs batted in, career games played, and putouts.

Junior outfielder Carlos Fantauzzi had the best offensive season of his collegiate career in his first season at Keuka College. The transfer from Onondaga CC led the Wolves with a .348 average, with 39 hits, 34 runs batted in, and 26 runs scored. Nearly half of his hits were for extra bases as he hit eight doubles, seven triples, and three home runs. It was the second-most triples in a season in program history. He also was a perfect 12-12 on stolen base attempts.

First-year Lucas Gilbert led the Keuka College pitching staff, allowing less than a hit an inning while striking out 33. Selected to the All-Conference team as a relief pitcher, Gilbert appeared in 11 games for the Wolves and led the team with two saves. Opposing batters hit just .234 off Gilbert, the third-best opposing batting average amongst qualified pitchers in the Empire 8.

Also honored on Tuesday was senior pitcher James Fino. He was named Keuka College's representative for the Empire 8 Baseball Sportsman of the Year. Fino made four starts on the mound and added six relief appearances for the Wolves. He pitched a career-best 27 innings while also setting a new career-low for earned run average and a new career-high for strikeouts.

Fino was one of seven from the conference honored. From the conference's release, "The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that 'Competing with Honor and Integrity' is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen."
