Box Score 2 KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Keuka College Baseball team sweeps Elmira College in an Empire 8 matchup on Saturday.
Keuka College (2-4, Empire 8) would win the first game 15-8 and continue the hot bats in the second game, winning 15-11.
Keuka College 15 vs. Elmira College 8 – Game one
The Keuka Baseball team would get off to a tough start as Elmira College would have two runs scored in the first. Elmira would add another in the top second inning making the score 3-0. The Wolves would add one in the bottom of the inning off a double from catcher RJ Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y / West Genesse). Elmira would continue to have runs cross home in the third and fourth inning making the score 8-1.
The Wolves got off to a hot start in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch. Dave Verrett (Cicero, N.Y. / Cicero-North Syracuse) hit a double to score 2 to start chipping away at the Soaring Eagles lead. Following Verrett, teammate Aaron Simons (Rome, N.Y / Rome Free Academy) would single to right field gaining two more runs shortening the lead to 8-5.
Going into the sixth inning the wolves would load the bases again with two walks, and a hit by pitch. Tyler Broderick (State College, Pa. / Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy) would put the ball in play and reach first on an error adding two more runs for the Wolves. Junior Nick Brown (Liverpool, N.Y / Liverpool) hit a double to center field tying the game 8-8. Verrett would have the big hit for the Wolves as he singled to left field and adding two more to the board making the score 10-8. The Wolves would keep the bats hot in the inning as Aaron Simons singled to right field. The Wolves would take advantage of the miscues in the field and two more runs would cross the board. Ryan Seales (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) hit a shot to the left field fence with an error in the outfield, he would go all around the bases and finish the inning with the score 15-8. Elmira would get a chance to fight back but senior pitcher Adam Pankowski (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy) wouldn't let them get the chance as he struck out two batters to get the victory 15-8.
Lead Wolves: Graduate Student Dave Verrett had three RBI's on the day. His double gave the Wolves the lead in the sixth inning. Teammate Arron Simons went 2-2 at the plate today and added four RBI's. He had a single and a double on the day.
Keuka College 15 vs. Elmira College 11 – Game two (8 innings)
The Soaring Eagles got on the board first with one run. Nick Boyle (Chenango Forks, N.Y. / Chenango Forks) would get things started for the Wolves as he worked the count and walked. Nick Kocjan (Canajoharie, N.Y. / Canajoharie) would single to center and Ryan Seales and Tyler Broderick would single to the outfield adding three runs to the board. James Griffin (Syracuse, N.Y. / East Syracuse-Minoa) hit a double to the fence, the Wolves would end the bottom of the first inning leading 6-1.
Elmira would try and come back as they put four runs on in the top of the second inning but the Wolves would keep the bats hot adding one run in the second, third, and fourth inning. Going to the fifth inning Dylan Richards (Johnson City, N.Y. / Johnson City) hit a double to the left field fence. The Wolves would then load the bases with a walk and a hit by pitch. Graduate Tyler Broderick singled to center field scoring two runs making the score 11-7.
The Keuka College Baseball team would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning coming from junior Nick Boyle with a double to center and Brady Booher (Rochester, N.Y. / Eastridge) hit a triple to center field scoring Boyle. The Wolves would extend the lead 14-7 after six.
Elmira would try to chip away at the lead as they gained three runs in the seventh and one in the top of the eighth. The Wolves led off the bottom of the inning with a pair of extra-base hits. Jimmy Griffin led the inning off with a triple. He then scored on a double by RJ Murphy. The umpires would come together in the inning and make the determination to call the game due to darkness with Keuka College defeating Elmira 15-11.
Lead Wolf: Graduate Student Tyler Broderick went 2-4 at the plate today and had three RBI and a walk in the victory.
KC Notes:
- Keuka College is now 5-2 all-time against Elmira College. Now 3-1 all-time at home.
- Freshman James Fino (Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon) pitched his first career win pitching 3.1 innings and striking out three and allowing five hits.
- Daniel Steve (Cortland, N.Y. / Cortland) had two strikeouts in the 1.1 innings pitched which moved him to seventh in career strikeouts with 81.
Up Next for the Wolves: Tomorrow's game against Elmira College has been postponed due to weather. The baseball team will be back in action on Saturday April 17 at Utica College.
