Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Keuka College Baseball team swept Crown College from Minnesota in a doubleheader on Monday in Florida.
The Green and Gold shutout the Storm in game 1, 8-0, and defeated them 2-1 in the nightcap.
With the win against Crown in game 1, Head Coach Rick Ferchen recorded his 40th victory in charge of the Green and Gold. That passed the previous leader, Jeff Cleanthes, who had 39 victories in his three seasons at Keuka College.
Keuka College (6-5) will conclude their spring trip on Tuesday as they face Thomas College from Maine in a doubleheader in Florida.
Game 1
Ryan Caroway led the way on the mound for Keuka in game 1. The sophomore threw a complete game shutout, scattering six hits while striking out three.
Keuka came out swinging against the Storm. Jake Redding, Robert LaRue, Kyle Dailey opened the bottom of the first with three straight singles. Dave Nuzzo walked to force in a run, then freshman Tyler Krowiak hit a bases-clearing triple down the right field line to give Keuka a 4-0 lead. Krowiak scored on a groundout later in the inning and Keuka led 5-0 after the first inning.
The Green and Gold added on three runs in the second inning. Redding singled and moved to second. He scored on a single by Kyle Dailey. Nuzzo followed that up with a double, scoring Dailey, and Keuka was up 7-0. Their final run came from Krowiak. He singled home Nuzzo for the 8-0 lead.
The rest of the game was all Caroway. The freshman allowed only four hits over the final five innings of play to secure his second career shutout and an 8-0 Keuka victory.
Game 2
The second game of the day proved to be a pitcher's duel. Crown College got on the board first in the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles put runners on first and second for the Storm to start the inning. Starting pitcher Kyle Michaud got a strikeout, but the next batter hit a double to right centerfield to give Crown a 1-0 lead. Michaud would strand runners on second and third with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
Keuka had a quick response to the scoring. Billy McDermott led the top of the fifth off with a single. He was then bunted to second. Pinch hitter Cameron Reid walked, bringing John Rizzo to the plate with one out. The sophomore doubled down the right field line. McDermott scored easily and Reid scored all the way from first to give Keuka a 2-1 advantage.
That score would carry into the seventh inning. Michaud struck out the first batter of the inning, however the Storm put the tying run on with a single. After a fielder's choice go get two outs, a second single put runners at first and third with two outs. Coach Ferchen turned to the bullpen and brought in Thomas Fowler for the save. The senior got the first batter he faced to pop out to the catcher to end the game with Keuka defeating Crown 2-1.
