Box Score 2 The Keuka College baseball team traveled to Utica, N.Y. for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon, and the Wolfpack were swept by the Pioneers by scores of 8-5 and 10-8.
Sophomore Robert LaRue (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and senior Dan Smith (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) and junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) each drove in runs in the opener for Keuka (12-23).
Junior Kyle Dailey (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) launched a three-run home run in game two, his first collegiate round-tripper, and freshman Alex Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) drove in two runs as the Green and Gold took an 8-4 lead into the fifth inning in the nightcap.
But the Pioneers (19-13) scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to complete the sweep.
Utica struck for four runs in the third inning of game one, but Keuka got a run back in the fourth when LaRue led off with a double and scored on Fenton's RBI double to left field. With runners at the corners and one out, Utica turned a double play on a fly ball to end the inning.
The Wolfpack knotted the score in the fifth. Sophomore Ben Payton (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) led off with a double and scored on Smith's RBI double to left field.
After freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) was hit by a pitch, junior Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. LaRue then tied the game at 4 on a two-run single up the middle.
But Utica scored three times in the fifth and once in the sixth to take the opener.
In the nightcap, Dailey was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, Fenton was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and freshman Joe Marasco (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Green and Gold.
Freshman Brian Colbert (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) added an RBI double and Cerrone had a two-run single in the loss.
Keuka struck for two runs in the second. With two outs, Fenton reached on a bunt single, Dailey advanced him to second on a single, and the bases were loaded after freshman John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) was hit by a pitch.
Cerrone put the Wolfpack up 2-0 with his two-run single down the right field line.
Utica countered with a two-run homer from Matthew DeMartino to tie the score in the bottom of the inning, but Colbert had an RBI double and Dailey smacked a three-run homer in the third to put Keuka up 6-2.
The Pioneers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Green and Gold lead swelled to 8-4 when Keuka pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the fourth.
The lead stayed 8-4 until Utica scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to win game two.
Keuka closes out the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) portion of the schedule with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Cazenovia College Saturday.
