Michaud's Gem Helps Baseball Split With Penn College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Junior Kyle Michaud (Elmira Heights, N.Y./Thomas A. Edison) tossed a complete-game, three-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Keuka College baseball salvaged a split of Sunday's North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Penn College of Technology at Kuhl Field in Keuka Park, N.Y.

The Wolfpack (12-21, 5-7 NEAC) lost game one, 3-2 in nine innings, before holding on for a 3-1 win in the nightcap.

With two NEAC games remaining — Keuka travels to Cazenovia for a doubleheader on Saturday — the Wolfpack are in fifth place in the conference.

The top four schools qualify for the NEAC tournament, held May 8-10, and to qualify, Keuka must sweep Cazenovia and hope for some help from Penn State-Berks (15-15-1, 7-5) and Penn College (13-16, 7-5).

Taking on Penn, Michaud allowed only a run in the second inning and retired 10 straight batters to improve to 2-4 on the year.

Senior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) was 2-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk, while junior Kyle Dailey (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double as the Wolfpack won their home finale.

Junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC), sophomore Robert LaRue (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) each added hits as Keuka won by out-hitting the Wildcats 6-3.

The Green and Gold pounced for a run in the first. LaRue led off with a single to left field, then stole second base. LaRue moved to third on a groundout and scored on Burachalk's RBI single to left field.

The Wildcats tied the score in the top of the second on a bases-loaded walk. But with the bases still loaded and Penn looking to take the lead, Michaud struck out Jeremy Rall looking to leave the bases loaded.

The Keuka lead grew to 2-1 when freshman Jake Redding (Victor, N.Y./Victor) scored an unearned run on a passed ball in the third, and Michaud made the lead hold up. He retired the side in the third, fourth and fifth innings, and worked around trouble in the sixth.

With runners at first and second and only one out, Cole Weachock hit a single to right center field. Evan Vigna tried scoring from second, but Fenton fielded the ball, tossed a strike to LaRue at second, and LaRue fired a relay throw to Dailey who tagged Vigna out at the plate for the second out.

Michaud retired the final four batters to earn the complete-game win.

In the opener, LaRue was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Burachalk was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, but Penn College scratched across a run in the top of the ninth to win 3-2.

Freshman Ryan Caroway (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) took the hard-luck loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits with a career-high nine strikeouts in nine innings pitched.

Penn College scored an unearned run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead, but the Green and Gold evened the score in the bottom of the frame.

LaRue led off with a single, stole second, and after freshman John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) walked, LaRue stole third and scored on Burachalk's RBI single through the right side of the infield.

Noah Esposito's RBI single gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but Keuka scored the equalizer in the bottom of the seventh. LaRue once again led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Burachalk's RBI single to right field.

Caroway worked around a two-out single in the eighth, but the Green and Gold couldn't score in the bottom of the inning, and Penn took the lead on an RBI groundout in the ninth.

Keuka mounted a comeback attempt in the bottom of the inning. Redding walked and moved to second on LaRue's single, but on Rizzo's infield grounder, Redding was thrown out at third base, and Keuka's next batter hit into a game-ending double play.

Keuka travels to Utica College for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday before closing out the regular season at Cazenovia (May 2) and at Alfred State (May 5).
