Baseball Falls to SUNY Poly on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Keuka College baseball team was swept by SUNY Polytechnic in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in Keuka Park, N.Y.

The Wolfpack (11-20, 4-6 NEAC) lost game one, 4-2 in nine innings, and fell by the same score in eight innings in game two.

In the opener, sophomore Ben Payton (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, but Keuka managed only seven hits and fell in nine innings.

Senior Cameron Hood (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) drew the Senior Day start and allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts over six effective innings.

The Green and Gold led 1-0 in the second after senior Dan Smith (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) hit a one-out triple and scored on Payton's double to left center field.

Poly scored twice in the fifth, and added a run in both the sixth and seventh to take a 4-1 lead.

The Wolfpack threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) hit a leadoff single and classmate Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) drew a walk.

Freshman Jake Redding (Victor, N.Y./Victor) reached on an error to load the bases with no outs, and Bowie singled to right field to plate Payton and trim the deficit to 4-2.

But Poly escaped the jam with a pop out and a double-play groundout to earn the win in game one.

In game two, the Wolfpack took a 2-0 lead into the sixth, but the Wildcats (11-11, 7-3) scored four times over the final three innings to complete the sweep.

Fenton was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and seniors Conner Anderson (Missoula, Mont./Sentinel) and Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) each had RBI for the Green and Gold.

Senior Keith Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Ave Marie University) took the tough-luck loss, allowing four runs (three earned) with three strikeouts and one walk in 7 1/3 innings pitched.

With one out in the first, senior Tommy Drumm (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) walked, senior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) singled, and Borchert walked to load the bases.

Anderson put Keuka ahead 1-0 on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Ryan worked out of trouble in the second, stranding runners at first and third with a strikeout and a groundout to keep Poly off the scoreboard.

The Wolfpack extended their lead to 2-0 in the fifth. Fenton led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and to third on a passed ball. Borchert plated Fenton with his fielder's choice groundout for a two-run lead.

But Poly scored an unearned run in the sixth, tied the game in the seventh, and scored on a single and a groundout to take the lead for good.

Before the game, the Wolfpack paid tribute to nine senior student-athletes on the team: Anderson, Borchert, Burachalk, Drumm, Hood, Ryan, Smith, Zach Nobles (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) and Dylan Thomas (Kent, Ohio/Theodore Roosevelt).

Together, those seniors guided Keuka to a 22-14 record (school-record for wins) and a share of the NEAC regular-season championship in 2014, the school's first-ever NEAC title.

Keuka closes out the home portion of the schedule with an 11 a.m. NEAC doubleheader vs. Penn College of Technology Sunday morning.
