Box Score 2 Keuka College's baseball team earned a big North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) sweep over rival Gallaudet (D.C.). University Sunday afternoon.
The Wolfpack (9-18, 4-4 NEAC) earned a 13-0 win after recording 14 hits in the opener. Freshman Ryan Caroway (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) earned the shutout win after allowing five hits with four strikeouts in a complete game to improve to 3-2.
In the nightcap, the Bison (5-23, 3-7) rallied from a 7-3, seventh-inning deficit, tying the game with four runs in the top of the inning. But freshman John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) hit a walkoff, two-out, RBI single to center field to give the Green and Gold the sweep.
Sophomore Robert LaRue (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, classmate Ben Payton (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, and freshman Joe Marasco (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) had a two-run single in game one.
Junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) had an RBI single to center field in the first for a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth. Senior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch.
After Fenton walked, senior Dan Smith (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) had an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. With the bases and two outs, LaRue doubled to the gap in left field, clearing the bases and giving the Green and Gold a 5-0 lead.
Caroway retired the side in the fifth before Keuka struck for five runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Payton sent a triple to right field to score two runs, then Payton scored on a passed ball for an 8-0 lead.
Freshman Alex Cerrone (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) hit an RBI double that scored classmate Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), and Rizzo had an RBI single to plate Cerrone and extend the lead to 10-0.
Keuka tacked on three runs in the seventh. Senior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) drew a bases-loaded walk, and Marasco had a two-run single up the middle to finish the scoring for the Wolfpack.
Caroway threw 104 pitches (67 strikes) in his first career complete-game win.
Keuka trailed 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth in the nightcap, but the Green and Gold struck for six runs, sparked by a two-run single from Marasco, and a two-run single from Fenton.
Gallaudet got a run back in the top of the sixth, but Fenton had an RBI single in the home half of the inning to put the Wolfpack ahead 7-3 heading to the seventh.
The Bison scored four runs on six hits in the top of the inning to even the score, and the game seemed destined for extra innings after Keuka made two quick outs in the bottom of the frame.
Junior Kyle Dailey (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. After an intentional walk to Marasco, sophomore pinch-runner Jared Taylor (North Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) scored the winning run when Rizzo, a pinch-hitter, lined a single to center field.
Fenton finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, LaRue was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Marasco was 1-for-2 with two RBI in the nightcap.
Freshman Kevin Franz (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) earned the win in relief, allowing one hit before stranding the go-ahead run on third base after getting Justin Strong to pop out to Burachalk in the seventh.
Keuka travels to Elmira College for a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
