Burachalk's 3 HR's Help Baseball Split With Medaille

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

One game does not make or break a season, but in the case of the Keuka College baseball team, holding on for a much-needed win in game two of Thursday's doubleheader with Medaille College will hopefully help the Wolfpack get their season back on track.

Senior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) smashed three home runs over the course of the doubleheader and now has four round-trippers in Keuka's last four games.

Burachalk finished 3-for-8 with five RBI and three runs scored, and the Wolfpack (6-17) rallied from a 6-0 fourth-inning deficit in game two to win 9-7 on Kuhl Field.

Burachalk's two-run home run to deep center field capped a seven-run fourth as the Wolfpack used a two-run double from freshman Ben Payton (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta), an RBI double from junior Kyle Dailey (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers), and RBI singles from freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) to complete the comeback.

Freshman Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y./Tioga) earned the win after allowing one run on three hits over four effective innings of relief.

The win salvaged a split on the day, as Medaille (10-12) rallied for a 14-7 win in game one of Keuka's 2015 home opener.

"That inning was big for our team and hopefully it's a turning point for the season. Something we can really go off of and hopefully go on a big run," said Burachalk, who earned first-team All-NEAC and was named All-New York Region honors in 2014.

"We haven't been able to put teams away, but being down six runs, coming back and actually finishing a game off is going to be huge for us. We couldn't let that lead get away from us once we got it."

Trailing 6-0, junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) walked and senior Conner Anderson (Missoula, Mont./Sentinel) was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with one out.

Rizzo's RBI single plated Fenton with the Green and Gold's first run, and Payton followed with a two-run double to left center field to score Anderson and Rizzo and slice the deficit to 6-3.

Dailey followed with a double to left field to score Payton, and Dailey moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Bowie's RBI single to right center field.

After junior Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) reached on a fielder's choice, Burachalk crushed a pitch 420 feet over the center field fence to put Keuka up 7-6.

Another big hit game in the sixth, when, with runners on first and second and one out, senior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) drove in two runs with a single into right center field as Keuka took a 9-6 lead into the seventh inning.

"The ball was decent-sized today. I'm just trying to put decent swings on the ball and not trying to hit home runs, just make solid contact," Burachalk said. "The ball felt good (coming off the bat) and that tail wind helped a little bit, too. This is definitely a big morale booster. That was huge, our first time having home games and we're able to pull out this win. Dakota pitched excellent, he let the guys put the ball in play and our defense played well behind him."

It wasn't easy to close out the Mavericks. Medaille got one run back on Daniel Luppens' RBI single and had the bases loaded with two outs. But senior Keith Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Ave Marie University) got Travis Chavanne to line out to Bowie to end the game.

Rizzo was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Borchert was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Dailey was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap.

After the Mavericks pushed across two runs in the top of the first of the opener, McDermott led off with a single and scored when Burachalk hit a two-run home run down the left field line to tie the score.

With one out in the third, Burachalk laced a solo home run towards the same spot in left field for a 3-2 lead, and the Wolfpack seized a 4-2 lead when Borchert scored on a passed ball.

The Mavericks responded by scoring four runs in the fourth, and added three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to lead 12-4.

Freshman Brian Colbert (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) and sophomore Robert LaRue (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) each had RBI singles in the sixth as the Green and Gold pulled within 12-6.

Bu the Mavericks tacked on two more runs in the seventh to win the opener.

Colbert was 3-for-5 with an RBI, Borchert was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and LaRue was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the first game.

Senior Dan Smith (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) was 2-for-4, and Fenton was 2-for-3 for Keuka in the opener. The Wolfpack lost despite recording 17 hits.

Keuka welcomes North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rivals Lancaster Bible College and Gallaudet (D.C.) University to campus for NEAC doubleheaders this weekend. The Wolfpack play Lancaster Bible Saturday and Gallaudet Sunday afternoon.
