Baseball Splits DH with Thomas College

Senior Dan Smith (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks) and freshman Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y./Tioga) each drove in two runs to help the Keuka College baseball team defeat Thomas (Maine) College 7-3 in game one of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

The Wolfpack (3-8) dropped the nightcap 10-2 to the Terriers (2-4) at the RussMat baseball tournament in Auburndale, Fla.

In the opener, eight student-athletes recorded at least one hit, and five student-athletes drove in a run to spark Keuka to the win.

Skinner was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored, while Smith was 1-for-2 with two RBI in the win.

Senior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, and freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Wolpack, who outhit the Terriers 12-9.

Keuka scored three times in the second, but Thomas tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the third.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, Keuka seized control thanks to a two-run fifth and a two-run sixth inning to earn the win.

Junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while senior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the opener.

Freshman Ryan Caroway (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) earned the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 5 1/3 innings.

Freshman Kevin Franz (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) tossed a scoreless final 1 2/3 innings in relief to close out the win.

In the nightcap, Thomas scored six runs over the first three innings and scored four runs in the top of the sixth to salvage the series split.

Junior Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) had a double, while Burachalk, Bowie, Fenton, senior Conner Anderson (Missoula, Mont./Sentinel) and freshman John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) each added singles for the Wolfpack.

Keuka concludes its season-opening, 12-game Florida trip with a non-conference clash with Westminster (MO.) College Friday.
