Box Score 2 In his first collegiate start, freshman Ryan Lawrence (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning to help the Keuka College baseball team salvage a split of Sunday's non-conference doubleheader with perennial power Union College in Winter Haven, Fla.
Lawrence's no-hitter bid ended with one out in the seventh when Jamie Faber hit a high chopper for an infield single, but Lawrence induced a ground out and a fly out to end the game.
With two outs and the tying run on first, Matt Drum crushed what appeared to be an extra base hit to deep center field, but freshman Jake Redding (Victor, N.Y./Victor) made a diving catch to secure the win for the Wolfpack.
Keuka dropped the opener 6-1 before pulling out a 1-0 win in the second game against Union (1-3), the two-time defending regular-season champions of the Liberty League.
Lawrence tossed a complete-game, one-hitter with no walks and one strikeout for the Wolfpack (2-2).
The game's only run came in the fourth, as senior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) led off with a single and freshman Brian Colbert (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) doubled to the gap. Burachalk tried to score on the play but was thrown out at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
Freshman John Rizzo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) then laced an RBI double down the left field line that plated Colbert for a 1-0 lead, and Lawrence made the lead stand.
Lawrence induced nine groundouts, including a key double play in the top of the fourth, to earn the win.
"Ryan pitched a memorable debut for us. He had good command of his fastball and the defense was behind him in this game," said Rick Ferchen, in his second season coaching the Green and Gold.
"Union's only hit came on a high chopper for an infield single that no one had a chance to make a play on. Then our defense came up big. Jake came out of nowhere to make that great diving catch, and it was one of the best catches in a tight situation like that that I've seen in my career."
In the opener, freshman Ryan Caroway (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) took the hard-luck loss in the opener, allowing six unearned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks in five innings.
Union's Adam Ashenfarb tossed a complete-game, four-hitter with seven strikeouts in the win. Burachalk, Rizzo, junior Brett Fenton (Troy, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC) and freshman Dakota Skinner (Waverly, N.Y./Tioga) each had singles in the loss for Keuka.
Union scraped across a run on an error in the bottom of the first, and tacked on two more runs on a groundout and a single in the second to lead 3-0.
The Green and Gold pushed across a run in the top of the fifth. Freshman Alec Bowie (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) led off with a walk and advanced to second on Rizzo's single. The runners moved up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from senior Dan Smith (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Forks), and Bowie scored on a groundout from sophomore Ben Payton (Oneonta, N.Y./Oneonta).
But Union responded with a three-run fifth to earn the win in the opener.
Keuka has a doubleheader with Hamilton College Monday afternoon as part of the 12-game, eight-day RussMat tournament.
"We are pitching well and throwing strikes right now and that is what is putting us in a position to have a chance to win games," Ferchen said. "Our hitting is gradually getting better as we play more and more games."
