Box Score Junior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) was 2-for-4 and classmate Conner Anderson (Missoula, MT/Sentinel) drove in a run with an RBI single, but the Keuka College baseball team suffered a 5-2 loss to the University of Rochester Tuesday at Towers Field in Rochester, N.Y.
The Storm (7-6) played a scoreless first four innings with the Yellowjackets (9-11) before Rochester struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Matt Todd started for Rochester and held the Green and Gold without a hit for the first three innings.
Burachalk broke up the no-hitter with a line drive single to right center field to lead off the fourth. Burachalk then stole second base but was stranded on second as the teams went to the bottom of the fifth scoreless.
The Yellowjackets used an RBI single, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-0 lead in the fifth, but the Storm got a run back in the sixth. Burachalk laced a double to left field, advanced to third on a single from junior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) and scored Keuka's first run on a wild pitch.
Trailing 5-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning, the Storm mounted a two-out rally to slice the deficit to three.
Senior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) got the rally started with a hard-hit single up the middle, advanced to second when classmate Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) coaxed a walk and scored when Anderson sent a single through the right side of the infield.
But the Green and Gold weren't able to complete the comeback and suffered the loss.
Keuka used eight different pitchers, with only junior Zach Nobles (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) going more than one inning. Nobles allowed an unearned run and one hit with no walks in 1 2/3 innings pitched.
Seniors Jeremy Pyszczynski (Alden, NY/St. Mary's), Patrick Campbell (Avon, NY/Avon) and Greg Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) all pitched one scoreless inning, as did juniors Devon Locher (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) and Cameron Hood (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon).
The Storm's home opener against Southern Vermont, slated for Wednesday afternoon, has been canceled.
Keuka travels to SUNYIT for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Friday.
