Box Score The Keuka College baseball team was supposed to play first-place Gallaudet (D.C.) University in a nine-inning North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest Sunday afternoon, but the two schools ended up going well into extra innings in the finale to the weekend series.
The Bison (23-13, 11-4 NEAC) ended up edging the Storm (18-11, 9-6) on an RBI double in the bottom of the 14th as Gallaudet emerged with a 4-3 win Sunday on Hoy Field in Washington, D.C.
Senior Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) tossed one of the longest starts ever by a Keuka College hurler. He allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits with eight strikeouts over 11 innings, but it wasn't enough to lift the Green and Gold.
Sophomore Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) drove in a pair of runs and junior Dan Smith (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) and freshman Robert LaRue (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) each added two hits in the loss.
Senior Brandon Jacobs (Walworth, NY/Gananda) relieved McVannan and allowed one run on four hits in 2 2/3 effective innings of relief.
Entering the final weekend of the regular season, the Bison and Penn State-Berks are tied for first in the NEAC with records of 11-4. Keuka College sits in third, followed by Penn State-Abington (8-7) and SUNYIT (8-8).
The top four schools qualify for the NEAC baseball tournament, May 9-11. The Storm hold the tiebreaker over Abington while both Gallaudet and SUNYIT hold the tiebreaker over the Storm.
Keuka and Berks close out the regular-season with a three-game series on the Keuka College campus Saturday and Sunday.
Taking on Gallaudet Sunday, the Green and Gold scored a pair of runs in the third inning thanks to a pair of defensive miscues.
The Bison got on the board on an RBI groundout from J.J. Klein in the bottom of the inning, and evened the score on Blake Phillips' RBI groundout in the sixth.
Gallaudet then took a 3-2 lead on Justin Strong's RBI double to left-center field in the seventh, and it appeared the Storm would fall to the Bison.
Keuka College was held hitless in the eighth, but McVannan retired the Bison in order in the bottom of the inning. Down to their last at-bats in the ninth, LaRue drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single from senior Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY/Eastridge).
With one out, McDermott drove in the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly out to center field that scored LaRue. With the bases loaded and two outs, Gallaudet ended the threat thanks to a fielder's choice.
McVannan retired Gallaudet in order in the bottom of the inning, and the Storm had a golden chance to take the lead in the top of the 10th. Smith led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Tristan Mills (Sodus, NY/Sodus) and got to third on a wild pitch. But again, the Bison escaped thanks to back-to-back groundouts.
In the 11th, it was Gallaudet's turn to threaten, putting runners on first and third with one out. But McVannan got Marcus Smith to hit into an inning-ending double play.
The Storm loaded the bases with two outs in the 12th after junior Conner Anderson (Missoula, MT/Sentinel) and Smith both singled and LaRue drew a walk, but a line out to the shortstop ended the threat.
The Green and Gold went down in order in both the 13th and 14th innings, and in the bottom of the 14th, the Bison struck for the winning run. William Bissell hit a one-out single and Mitchell Bensman ended the marathon game with an RBI double to left-center field as the Bison took two of three from the Storm.
The Storm travel to Houghton College for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday before hosting Utica College in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday.
