Box Score 2 The Keuka College baseball team traveled to first-place Gallaudet (D.C.) University Saturday afternoon for a showdown of two of the top teams in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, and the Storm emerged with a split against the Bison.
The Storm then took game two by a score of 10-2 as senior Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and junior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) each drove in three runs.
Junior Tommy Drumm (Oswego, NY/Oswego) added a pair of RBI and classmate Conner Anderson (Missoula, MT/Sentinel) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored as the Storm (18-10, 9-5 NEAC) salvaged a split with the Bison (22-13, 10-4).
Junior Keith Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Ave Marie University) improved to 1-2 after pitching a complete-game, eight-hitter. He allowed two runs (one earned) with no walks and one strikeout to help the Green and Gold earn the win.
In the opener, Borchert was 3-for-4 with two runs scored senior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) was 2-for-4 with two RBI, senior Dylan Campbell (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and junior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) was 2-for-2 in the loss.
Gallaudet scored four first-inning runs, but Campbell hit an RBI triple to slice the deficit to 4-1 heading into the bottom of the second.
The Bison extended the lead to 7-1 in the second, but Corbin's two-out, two-run double in the third plated Borchert and Burachalk and sliced the deficit to 7-3.
In the fifth, the Green and Gold evened the score. Freshman Robert LaRue (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on Borchert's single and the Storm loaded the bases on Corbin's single to right field.
Senior pinch-hitter Dave Goetz (Kirkwood, NY/Windsor) scored LaRue on an RBI single to center field, and after a pop up, Campbell was hit by a pitch to score Borchert and trim the deficit to 7-5.
Senior pinch-hitter Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) reached on a fielder's choice to score both Goetz and Corbin and even the score at 7, but with runners on first and second and only one out, Gallaudet used a double-play to keep the game tied.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when Chris Guinn ended the game with an RBI single to left field.
Senior Jeremy Pyszczynski (Alden, NY/St. Mary's) took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out eight and raised his career total to 101, breaking Simon Mills' (2007-10) previous career strikeout record of 97.
In the second game, Gallaudet took a 1-0 lead into the second, but the Storm exploded for six runs to take a 6-1 lead. McVannan had an RBI single, Drumm coaxed a bases-loaded walk, Mitaynes had an RBI single and Borchert had a bases-clearing double to spark the Green and Gold.
Gallaudet clawed within 6-2, scoring an unearned run on an error in the third, but the Storm pushed across four runs in the fifth to seize control. Junior Dan Smith (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) had an RBI double, McVannan drove home two runs on a bunt single and Drumm added an RBI on a sacrifice bunt to help the Storm earn a split.
Keuka College and Gallaudet play a single nine-inning contest at noon Sunday.
