Box Score 2 Senior Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) hit a walkoff, RBI single to win game one of Saturday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader with Cazenovia College and sophomore Thomas Fowler (Batavia, NY/Elba) helped the Storm complete the sweep with his first career save as the Storm ran their winning streak to six games.
Keuka College (13-9, 8-4 NEAC) triumphed over the Wildcats (5-19, 1-8) by scores of 5-4 and 4-3 on a sunny day at Kuhl Field.
Sophomore Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Mitaynes, juniors Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) and Dan Smith (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) each added RBI in the first game.
Junior Keith Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Ave Marie University) allowed two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched and left with a 4-2 lead before the Wildcats rallied to tie the score in the top of the seventh.
After McDermott coaxed a leadoff walk, Burachalk advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Borchert, the program's career RBI leader, was intentionally walked, and senior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) drew a one-out walk to load the bases for Mitaynes.
Mitaynes patiently worked the count before ripping the game-winning single into shallow right field. As soon as Mitaynes reached first base, he was mobbed by his teammates after delivering the walkoff hit.
"It was huge, I was just happy to be a part of it and to be called on by coach (Rick Ferchen) so I could be in that situation to help my team win," Mitaynes said afterwards. "I was just trying to get on base any way I could, and the pitcher came at me with a strike. I fought off some pitches, then on that 3-2 count, anything close I was just trying to make contact and not strike out looking. It was a great pitch for me to hit. I've never had a walkoff hit like this and I'm definitely going to remember this one for years to come."
Borchert put the Storm up 1-0 on an RBI groundout in the first. Cazenovia tied the score in the fourth, but in the fifth, McDermott had an RBI single into left field and Burachalk put the Storm up 3-1 on a sacrifice fly.
After the Wildcats pushed across a run in the top of the sixth, Smith gave the Storm a 4-2 lead on an RBI double in the bottom of the inning.
Cazenovia tied the score on a throwing error in the seventh, setting the stage for Mitaynes' late-game heroics.
In the nightcap, senior Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Burachalk was 1-for-1 with two runs scored, two walks and an RBI and Corbin was 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Storm.
The Green and Gold pounced for two runs in the first. Schuck led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Dylan Thomas (Kent, Ohio/Theodore Roosevelt) and scored on Burachalk's double to center field. With two outs in the inning, Corbin hit a single into center field to score Burachalk as Keuka led 2-0.
The Wildcats threatened to score in the fifth, putting runners on first and third with nobody out. But senior Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) escaped the jam, getting a groundout and a fly out to end the threat.
Keuka College tacked on two runs in the fifth when Borchert had an RBI groundout and Corbin pounded a double into center field to extend the lead to 4-0.
Cazenovia pushed across three runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-3 ballgame, but with the bases loaded and two outs, Fowler induced Chris Williams into an inning-ending groundout to maintain the one-run lead.
McVannann allowed three runs (two earned) on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched.
Fowler earned the save after working around a one-out walk as the Storm earned their sixth straight NEAC win.
"This was a big weekend. We're playing great, everyone's clicking and if we keep playing like this, we will be successful," Burachalk said. "This is a team full of good guys and coach Ferchen is fun to play for. We play some good, clean baseball and we're winning a lot of games, which is always good. If it's a close game, we're confident that someone is going to get the job done, someone will do something big and most of the time, we will squeak out a win."
The Storm travel to Medaille College for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader Monday before hosting Alfred State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
