The Keuka College baseball team earned its first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) series win of the 2014 season after splitting Tuesday's doubleheader against Lancaster Bible College.
Keuka (7-5, 2-1 NEAC) dropped the opener, 3-1, but won the nightcap 9-8 to finish with a 2-1 record in the series with the Chargers (6-8, 1-2).
Sophomore Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while juniors Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) each plated two runs in the second game for Keuka.
Burachalk was 3-for-4 with two doubles while Borchert blasted a solo home run and added an RBI single for the Green and Gold.
Senior Zach Nobles (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings pitched.
Borchert gave Keuka a 1-0 lead on a first-inning, RBI single and senior Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) added an RBI double and McDermott had an RBI single as the Storm took a 3-0 lead into the third.
Borchert clubbed a solo home run for a 4-0 lead, and after a solo home run from the Chargers, Keuka scored an unearned run in the fifth for a 5-1 lead.
Lancaster Bible pulled within 5-3 on a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Keuka pushed across four runs in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead. McDermott and Burachalk each had two-run doubles during the frame.
Leading 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh, Lancaster Bible pulled within one on a solo home run, but sophomore Kyle Michaud (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison) struck out the last two batters to earn the save.
In the opener, McDermott had an RBI single in the first inning, but the Storm suffered the loss despite a solid pitching performance from junior Keith Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Ave Marie University).
Ryan allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in taking the complete-game loss.
Schuck and McDermott were each 2-for-4 while senior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) went 1-for-3 for the Storm, who managed only five hits in the opener.
The Storm travel to NEAC rival SUNYIT Saturday afternoon for a conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
The Green and Gold's home opener is against Southern Vermont April 9.
