Ninth Inning Comeback Sparks Baseball to Win

Box Score

Trailing 7-3 and down to their last out of Friday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener against Lancaster Bible College, the Keuka College baseball team stunned the Chargers with seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn a thrilling, 10-7 win in Lancaster, Pa.

Senior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, junior Conner Anderson (Missoula, MT/Sentinel) was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and sophomore Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Storm (6-4, 1-0 NEAC).

Senior Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) was 1-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while seniors Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Dave Goetz (Kirkwood, NY/Windsor) and juniors Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) and Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) each had RBIs as seven different student-athletes drove in a run in the win.

Lancaster Bible (5-7, 0-1) pushed across five runs (one earned) in the bottom of the eighth to take a 7-3 lead, and after Corbin singled to lead off the inning, the next two batters were retired.

That's when the Storm went to work. Junior Dan Smith (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) walked and Corbin scored on a single from Goetz, a pinch-hitter. Smith moved to third and Goetz to second on the play, and Smith crossed the plate on an RBI single from Schuck that pulled the Storm within 7-5.

The Storm loaded the bases when McDermott was hit by a pitch, and when Burachalk was plunked, Goetz scored to make it a one-run game.

Borchert coaxed a bases-loaded walk to knot the score at 7, then McDermott crossed the plate with the go-ahead run on another hit by pitch. McVannan drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Burachalk, and Anderson closed out the scoring with an RBI single that scored Borchert for a 10-7 lead.

McVannan came on in the bottom of the ninth and earned the save after striking out the last two batters for the Storm.

"I couldn't be prouder of the way our guys played and fought back today," said Rick Ferchen, Keuka's first-year coach. "Especially how our guys have come out and played very well in bad weather. We've had temperatures in the teens and 20 degrees with the wind chill during this start to our season, but these guys come out and give it their all. They're always battling and it's been a lot of fun to watch our guys. I'm very happy and excited for our team. We're sitting here at 6-4 and it's always nice to get a win in your conference opener."

Senior Jeremy Pyszczynski (Alden, NY/St. Mary's) allowed five runs (one earned) on only three hits while striking out six batters over 7 2/3 effective innings. In his last four innings, Pyszczynski did not allow a base hit as the Storm's hurlers surrendered only four hits in the win.

Sophomore Kyle Michaud (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison) came on in relief and earned the win.

Burachalk staked Keuka to a 1-0 lead on a two-out home run in the first, his second home run in as many games.

The Chargers tied the score in the bottom of the inning, and led 2-1 heading into the fifth before Keuka pushed across a run in both the fifth and sixth innings. Anderson delivered an RBI double in the fifth and Corbin had an RBI double in the sixth as Keuka took a 3-2 lead.

Lancaster then took the lead in the bottom of the eighth before the Storm staged their dramatic rally in the ninth.

The Storm's NEAC doubleheader Saturday against Lancaster Bible College has been canceled due to inclement weather. Those games will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon starting at noon.

The Green and Gold's home opener is against Southern Vermont April 9.
