Box Score Junior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was 4-for-6 with three RBI and sophomore Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) was 2-for-4 with three RBI as the Keuka College baseball team picked up a 14-7 win against Cairn (Pa.) University Wednesday in Langhorne, Pa.
Four different Keuka (5-2) student-athletes recorded multiple hits in the win, and four different student-athletes drove in two or more runs as the Storm picked up their fourth straight win.
Besides Borchert and McDermott, junior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored and senior Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored as Keuka scored in seven of the nine innings.
McDermott and Borchert each scored twice while junior Dan Smith (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) scored twice and had an RBI and junior Keith Ryan (Fort Myers, Fla./Ave Marie University) drove in two runs for the Green and Gold.
Keuka stole a season-high seven bases as McDermott swiped a pair and Burachalk, Ryan, seniors Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Dave Goetz (Kirkwood, NY/Windsor) and junior Conner Anderson (Missoula, MT/Sentinel) each had stolen bases in the win.
The Storm surged to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles from Burachalk and Borchert, but Cairn (2-14) got a run back in the bottom of the second.
Borchert and McVannan each had RBI singles in the third and McDermott had an RBI single and Ryan plated a run on a groundout as Keuka pushed across two more runs in the top of the fourth.
Leading 6-3 heading into the fifth, Ryan drove home a run when he reached on an error and senior Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) coaxed a two-out, bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 8-3.
After adding a run in the sixth, Keuka struck for three more in the seventh, keyed by RBI singles from McDermott and Borchert.
The Highlanders pulled within 12-6 with three runs in the bottom of the inning, but Keuka tacked on two runs in the eighth and had 14 hits in winning its fourth straight.
The Storm continue their season-opening road trip with a non-conference doubleheader against Wilkes (Pa.) University at 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The Green and Gold's home opener is against Southern Vermont April 9.
