Box Score 2 The Keuka College baseball team split Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader at Utica College, winning game one 6-5 on a two-run single by junior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) while dropping game two 9-7 in Utica, N.Y.
Corbin smacked a one-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh of game one to lift the Storm (7-18) to a win in game one.
Corbin and junior Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) each drove in two runs, sophomore Conner Anderson (Missoula, MT/Sentinel) added an RBI and junior Josh Mead (Hilton, NY/Hilton) threw a complete-game, four-hitter to earn the win.
Trailing 2-0 going into the second, sophomore Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) doubled down the right field line and scored on Anderson's RBI single.
The Pioneers tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Storm knotted the score at four in the fifth. Anderson drew a one-out walk, freshman Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) and junior Kyle McVannan (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) each singled and Schuck plated McDermott and McVannan with a two-run double.
Utica threatened to re-take the lead in the bottom of the inning, but with runners at first and third with one out, Mead got a double-play ball to end the threat.
The Green and Gold took the lead for good in the seventh. With one out, McVannan walked, sophomore Dylan Thomas (Kent, OH/Theodore Roosevelt) reached on an error and Schuck singled to load the bases for Corbin, who singled in the eventual winning run.
Utica got one run back on a sacrifice fly, but Mead got a fly out to end the first game.
Mead allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits in the complete-game win.
In the nightcap, Keuka took a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the third, but the Pioneers (3-19) scored seven runs over the last four innings to salvage the split.
Corbin and Borchert each had RBI singles, senior Keith Prestano (Queens, NY/Xaverian) added a run-scoring sacrifice fly and McDermott hit a two-run double to key a five-run third for the Storm.
Utica got two runs back in the third, but the Storm pushed across an unearned run in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. Riley Kevil's two-run home run pulled the Pioneers within one, 7-6 in the fourth inning, and Utica pulled even on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
After the Green and Gold were retired in order in the sixth, Matthew DeMartino hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to give Utica the lead for good.
Keuka was retired 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.
Schuck finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and McDermott was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Keuka, which was out-hit 11-9.
The Storm close out the NEAC portion of the schedule with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Cazenovia College Saturday afternoon.
