The Keuka College baseball team scored nine first-inning runs en route to a 12-5 victory over Hamilton College in game one of Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader, but the Storm dropped game two 6-5 to split with the Continentals at DeLutis Field in Rome, N.Y.
Senior Keith Prestano (Queens, NY/Xaverian) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and sophomore Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, OH/Upper Arlington) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in the opener.
Junior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI while classmate Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) drove in two runs and scored two runs in the first game.
Borchert laced a two-run double to left field, Prestano had an RBI single up the middle, Schuck added a two-run single and Corbin delivered a two-run double into left field to key a nine-run first inning for the Green and Gold (3-16).
Freshman Billy McDermott (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) added an RBI single in the second as the Storm took a 10-1 lead, and Prestano hit a two-run double to finish Keuka's scoring in the sixth.
Hamilton got three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but it wasn't enough against junior starter Josh Mead (Hilton, NY/Hilton). Mead earned the first win of his Keuka career by holding Hamilton to five runs (three earned) on seven hits in a complete-game performance.
In the nightcap, the Storm took a 2-0 lead after Borchert was hit by a pitch and freshman Kyle Dailey (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers) doubled to center field.
Hamilton trimmed the lead to 2-1 on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first and tied the score on a sacrifice fly in the third, but the Green and Gold took a 3-2 lead on fielding error with two outs in the fourth.
Leading 3-2, Keuka surrendered four runs on four hits in the fifth as the first six batters reached base in the inning.
The Storm mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh. Schuck hit a one-out single and advanced to third on Corbin's single. Borchert plated Schuck on a groundout and Dailey singled up the middle to score Corbin and make it a one-run game, but a groundout ended the threat and the game.
The Storm return home to host Lancaster Bible at noon Saturday on Senior Day, and SUNYIT at noon on Sunday on Parents' Day.
