Wolves Fall to Saxons on Senior Day

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Men's Lacrosse team lost 23-4 to Alfred University on Saturday at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Seth Spurgeon had a pair of goals for Keuka College (0-4, 0-4 Empire 8). Nicholas Pipher added a goal and an assist and Jared Hurlbutt made 18 saves in goal for the Wolves.

The Saxons took the lead two minutes into the game and did not look back. Alfred netted seven goals in the opening period against the Wolves. Keuka College had two good chances late in the quarter as Kasey Gallina and Seth Spurgeon both drove down the middle on goal, but both attempts were saved. Alfred led 7-0 after the first quarter.

Alfred netted the first five goals of the second quarter, extending their lead to 12-0. Seth Spurgeon snapped the Saxons' run. The junior scored an unassisted goal on the man-up to make it 12-1 with six minutes left in the half. The Saxons closed with three goals to lead 15-1 at the half.

It was a low-scoring third quarter as the two teams combined for just four goals. The lone goal for the Wolves came as Nicholas Pipher set up senior Brandon Smith for the tally. Alfred carried an 18-2 lead to the final quarter.

The Saxons scored the first five goals of the fourth. Keuka College scored the final two goals of the game. Spurgeon got his second man-up goal of the afternoon with Kasey Gallina getting the assist. Nicholas Pipher then capped the scoring in the game with an unassisted goal. Alfred University won 23-4 on Saturday.

  • Keuka College falls to 2-8 all-time against Alfred University
  • Due to COVID opt-outs, Keuka College was playing their first game since April 3
  • Alfred had a 26-5 advantage in faceoffs. All five wins came from Seth Spurgeon. He now has 159 in his career and moved to sixth on the career faceoff list
  • Jared Hurlbutt recorded a new career-high with 18 saves in the game

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves finished the regular season and will be the four seed going into the Empire 8 Tournament. The Wolves will play at the top seed, St. John Fisher, on Thursday, May 6 at 7pm.
