Keuka College Softball Splits Home Opener vs Elmira College

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Keuka College Softball team spilt the season home opener vs Elmira college on Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.

Keuka College (1-1, 1-1 Empire 8) took the opening game against the Soaring Eagles 4-0. Elmira however would respond back in game two 7-4.

Keuka College 4 vs. Elmira College 0 – Game one  

It was a pitching duel for the first three innings with senior pitcher Whitney Tyler in the circle for the Wolves. To start off the bottom of the third inning for the Wolves Hayley Gorges would get things started with a base hit. With some miscues in the defense for Elmira College, two runs would score getting the Wolves on the board. Danielle Bosch would put the ball in play and reach first on an error. Kelsey Mohl singled getting an RBI scoring Bosch.

In the fifth inning the Wolves would get an insurance run to make the lead 4-0. The lead would stand for the Keuka College as the Wolves defeated the Soaring Eagles in game one.

Lead Wolf: Starting pitcher Whitney Tyler controlled the game in the circle. The senior would allow only two hits and tied her career high of eight strikeouts. Tyler got the complete game shutout without allowing a walk.

Elmira College 7 at Keuka College 4 – Game two

Elmira College would answer first in the top of the second with a leadoff double that came around to score. The Soaring Eagles would add two more in top of third.

The Keuka College Wolves would respond back in the bottom of the third with a leadoff walk by Helena Hill . Teammate Danielle Bosch would single up the middle moving Hill to second. A run scored on an error, then Jordan Cole singled to score Bosch. Senior Hayley Gorges knocked in her teammate's Mohl and Cole with a single to right field and the Wolves would take over the lead 4-3.

Elmira College would add runs in the fifth inning taking back over the lead and would add two more in the top of the sixth to expand the lead 7-4. In the bottom of the seventh the Wolves would load the bases but were unable to score as Elmira College won game two.

Lead Wolf: Hayley Gorges had the big hit for the Keuka College in game two. Starting second baseman drove in two runs on the day.

KC Notes:

  • The Wolves are now 7-19 all-time against Elmira College.
  • The game one win was the first for Keuka College against Elmira in over 30 seasons.  
  • Whitney Tyler now has 7 career shutouts tied for fourth in career pitching records at Keuka College.
  • Helena Hill, Emily VanDelinder and Hannah DelGatto all recorded their first collegiate hits on Saturday.

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves return to action on Friday on the road as they face nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College in an Empire 8 doubleheader.
