Burns Scores Seven in Wolves Victory

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Junior Andrew Burns tallied seven goals as the Keuka College Men's Lacrosse team defeated Elmira College 15-4 on Sunday afternoon.

Keuka College improves to 2-0 on the young season. Joining Burns with goals in the game for Keuka was Pat Giardino, Craig Gerhardt, and Mark Shattuck each with a pair. Zach Dempsey and Matt Mahalick also collected goals. Mahalick added four assists in the win and went 14-17 at the faceoff spot. Freshman goalie Ryan Mavretish made 13 saves in goal to earn the victory.

Keuka College 15 vs. Elmira College 4

After Elmira College scored the opening goal just over five minutes into the contest, the Wolves quickly responded with a goal to tie the game. Keuka added a tally in the first and led 2-1 after one. The second quarter was all Keuka. The wolves scored five goals, shutting out the Soaring Eagles, to lead 7-1 at the half. Keuka continued their run in the third. The Wolves ended with nine unanswered to build their lead. Elmira snapped the run with a goal at the end of the third, but Keuka led 9-2 going to the final quarter. Keuka put the game away in the fourth. The Wolves outscored Elmira 6-2 in the final quarter with five of the six goals coming on man-up situations. Keuka College continued onto the 15-4 victory.

Stepping Up on the Man-Up: In the fourth quarter, Keuka College went 5-6 on man-up chances. The five goals on the advantage rank in a tie for seventh all-time for Keuka. Burns contributed three of the goals, tying him for the most ever in a game in Keuka College history

KC Notes:

  • Elmira College remains in the lead in the all-time series, holding a 11-10 lead in the series since 1990. However the Wolves have gotten the best of the Soaring Eagles as of late, winning the last four meetings
  • Keuka's 15 goals was the second most in their series with Elmira
  • Matt Mahalick won 14 faceoffs against the Soaring Eagles. He has won 271 over his career, passing Chris Sullivan (2007-09) for second-most all-time.
  • Andrew Burns becomes the 10th player to scored seven goals in a game for Keuka College
  • Harold Pallone collected nine groundballs for Keuka College. The freshman has 20 on the season, holding an early lead in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves have a week to prepare until they travel to the College of Brockport to face the Golden Eagles next Saturday. Since 2001, Brockport leads the series with Keuka 8-5 and have won the past two matches. The Golden Eagles defeated Keuka at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex last season 9-4.
