Women's Lax Claims NEAC Regular-Season Crown

Box Score

Seniors Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) and Olivia Hudson (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) each scored in overtime as the Keuka College women's lacrosse team outlasted Morrisville State 15-13 to claim the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular-season championship.

Hudson finished with five goals, Burt added three goals, and classmate Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) contributed four goals with one assist to power Keuka (11-2, 9-0) to a perfect record in NEAC play.

Keuka earned the No. 1 seed for the NEAC tournament, Morrisville State is No. 2, Medaille College is No. 3, SUNY Polytechnic is No. 4, and Cazenovia is No. 5.

The Green and Gold, winners of five of the last six NEAC postseason championships, will host the annual NEAC tournament next Saturday and Sunday. Keuka will play the winner of Cazenovia and SUNY Poly at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in a semifinal contest, with Morrisville and Medaille meeting at 2 p.m. in the other semifinal.

The NEAC championship is at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The winner of the NEAC tournament receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. Keuka has advanced into the NCAA tournament in each of the last two seasons.

Taking on rival Morrisville State (8-7, 8-1), Maguire won eight draw controls and had three groundballs, while sophomore Sydney Forshay (Clifton Springs, N.Y./Midlakes) scored two goals and classmate Samantha Peacock (Phelps, N.Y./Midlakes) collected three groundballs for the Wolfpack.

Sophomore Kayla Robinson (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) stopped a career-high 14 saves to earn the win and improve to a perfect 8-0 on the year.

"We played good defense and we did a great job at holding Morrisville in check offensively. Plus, Kayla made some awesome saves that really helped us, too," said Eryn McCaffrey, Keuka's first-year head coach.

"It was an evenly-matched game. Our movement on offense was great, we had to be opportunistic and make the most out of our screens, and we were constantly moving the ball around and creating opportunities for ourselves. A win like this gets us in that playoff mindset. We know what we need to clean up and improve upon and I'm proud of how we played. We've come a long ways from day one to now and I'm looking forward to hosting NEAC's."

Tied at four after one half, neither school led by more than two goals in the second half, with eight lead changes down the stretch.

The Mustangs seized a 6-5 lead on Hunter Waldau's unassisted tally 4:09 into the second, but Maguire and Hudson answered with free position goals to give the Green and Gold a 7-6 lead with 23:28 remaining.

Morrisville State scored three goals in a span of 2:31 to take a 9-7 lead, but Maguire found Forshay for a goal, Hudson scored an unassisted goal and junior Samantha Staino (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) put Keuka ahead 10-9 on a free position tally with 13:11 remaining.

Waldau and Burt traded goals as Keuka led 11-10 with 9:21 left, but Angela Marriott's free position goal knotted the score with 8:07 to play.

Maguire and Ally Zlinsky then traded goals as the two schools were even at 12 with 3:17 remaining. Forshay scored an unassisted goal with 58 seconds remaining in regulation for a 13-12 lead, but Marriott forced overtime with her unassisted tally with 13 seconds remaining.

The Wolfpack won all three draw controls in the extra session, and Burt put Keuka up for good on a free position shot with 53 seconds to play. Hudson added an insurance goal with one second remaining to lift the Wolfpack to the regular season title.
