Box Score Junior Matt Beebe (Syracuse, N.Y./LaFayette) scored five points and senior Eric Saltrelli (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) finished with 12 saves as the Keuka College men's lacrosse team knocked off Hilbert College 10-7 on a rainy Wednesday evening at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Beebe scored twice and handed out three assists, and senior Cory Gray (Seneca Castle, N.Y./Midlakes) added two goals with two assists as the Wolfpack (7-3, 7-1 NEAC) bounced back from their first conference loss in three years to win their North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) finale.
Senior Derek Pfeiffer (Lee Center, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) and junior Brendan King (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) each scored twice to lift the Green and Gold.
Keuka secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming NEAC postseason tournament, and the Green and Gold will host a semifinal on Wednesday, April 29. Keuka is the four-time defending NEAC postseason champion.
Keuka moved within half a game of Morrisville State (8-5, 7-0) for first place in the NEAC. Morrisville State plays Bryn Athyn (Pa.) College Saturday afternoon, but even if the Mustangs lose, they will win the NEAC regular-season title on the strength of their win over Keuka April 18.
Sophomore Dustin Springer (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) collected six groundballs, caused three turnovers and had an assist, while junior Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) and freshman Zach Dempsey (Cleveland, N.Y./Central Square) each had a goal in the win.
Gray added six groundballs, sophomore Matt Mahalick (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette) won 9 of 18 faceoffs with six groundballs, and Luppino added two caused turnovers for the Wolfpack.
Neither team scored until Pfeiffer ripped home a shot to the upper corner of the goal, off a feed from Gray, with 6:07 remaining in the first.
The Keuka lead grew to 2-0 when Beebe found Pfeiffer for a tally with 1:21 remaining, and a stout Wolfpack defense, led by Springer, seniors Matt Kealy (Lorraine, N.Y./South Jefferson) and Marc Sacco (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse) and junior Tom Lupo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) held the Hawks (8-5, 5-2) scoreless for the first 22:18.
Shaughn Irving broke the scoreless streak with his unassisted tally 7:18 into the second, but Beebe found King for a score and a 3-1 Keuka lead with 6:38 remaining before halftime.
Hilbert scored the next two goals to pull even with 2:51 remaining. Following a Keuka timeout, 14 seconds after Hilbert tied the game, Springer found a cutting King for a goal and a 4-3 lead.
After Dempsey rifled home a goal, Gray darted around the defense and beat the first-half clock for Keuka's second tally in 18 seconds to send the Wolfpack into halftime up 6-3.
Luppino, Gray and Beebe scored goals in the third as the Green and Gold led 9-3, but Hilbert responded by scoring the next three goals to pull within 9-6 with 5:22 remaining in the fourth.
Beebe put away the Hawks when he ran behind the cage and flipped in a behind-the-back goal for a 10-6 edge with 2:23 remaining.
The Wolfpack close out the regular season hosting Alfred State at 4 p.m. Thursday in a non-conference contest.
