Balanced Attack Sparks Men's Lax Past Wells

Seniors Derek Pfeiffer (Lee Center, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) and James Voigt (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan) scored three goals with two assists, while junior Matt Beebe (Syracuse, N.Y./LaFayette) added two goals with three assists as the Keuka College men's lacrosse knocked off Wells College 15-7 Wednesday in Aurora, N.Y.

Senior Cory Gray (Seneca Castle, N.Y./Midlakes) scored three goals, junior Tyler Skowronski (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) handed out three assists, and classmate Brendan King (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) added two goals as the Wolfpack (6-2, 6-0 NEAC) won their sixth straight.

Junior Jake Altman (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) won 80 percent of his faceoffs (12 of 15) and scooped up a career-high 11 groundballs, while sophomore Matt Mahalick (LaFayette, N.Y./LaFayette) won 88.9 percent of faceoffs (8 of 9) and had seven groundballs as the Green and Gold won 83.3 percent of the faceoffs (20 of 24).

Pfeiffer, King, junior Tom Lupo (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and freshman Garrett Stonewell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) each collected three groundballs as Keuka enjoyed a 46-25 edge in groundballs against the Express (2-7, 0-5).

Beebe, Lupo and Voigt each caused two turnovers for the Wolfpack, who remain in first place in the NEAC heading into Saturday's showdown at Morrisville State.

The Wolfpack knocked off the Mustangs 13-5 to claim the 2014 NEAC postseason championship, Keuka's fourth straight NEAC title.

Senior Eric Saltrelli (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) made two saves and allowed four goals in 30:00 to improve to 5-2, while sophomore Jacob Wood (Marietta, N.Y./Auburn) made eight saves and allowed three goals in the second half.

Skowronski assisted on the game's first two goals, feeding Voigt 2:26 in for a 1-0 lead before finding Gray for a two-goal lead with 9:22 remaining in the first quarter.

Gray and Beebe each added two goals, while Pfeiffer and senior Isaiah Nalls (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) added a goal as the Wolfpack led 8-0 10:17 into the contest.

Wells outscored the Green and Gold 4-1 over the next 12:20 to pull within 9-4 on Brian Buttner's man-up tally with 6:12 remaining in the second quarter.

But Pfeiffer scored two goals and Voigt added an unassisted tally to stake the Wolfpack to a 12-4 halftime lead.

The Keuka defense, led by Lupo, senior Marc Sacco (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) and sophomore Dustin Springer (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) clamped down and held Wells scoreless for a stretch of 21:33 bridging the second, third and fourth quarters to pull away.

Voigt and King each scored in the third as Keuka extended its lead to 14-4 just 5:35 into the third.

The Express were led by Buttner (1G, 2A) and Ian Domon (2G).
