Women's Soccer Triumphs in NEAC Opener vs. Wells

Box Score

Freshman Nicole Browe (Kendall, N.Y./Kendall) scored twice as the Keuka College women's soccer team knocked off Wells College 4-1 Saturday afternoon in Aurora, N.Y.

Sophomore Carly Sanford (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and freshman Sarah Hartman (Macedon, N.Y./Wayne) each added goals to lift the Wolfpack (1-2, 1-0 NEAC) to a win in their North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener.

Freshman Kenna Kosinski (Mumford, N.Y./Caledonia-Mumford) made five saves for her first collegiate win.

"This is a good way for us to start conference play," said Steve Christenson, Keuka College's second-year coach.

"It was a total team effort out there. We made some mistakes and it wasn't pretty at times, but for getting a win in our first conference game, we'll take it."

The Green and Gold took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Sanford just one minute and 23 seconds into the contest. A corner kick from sophomore Abbey David (Kendall, N.Y./Kendall) was blocked, but Sanford collected the loose ball and buried her first goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 until freshman Emily Wolf (Hornell, N.Y./Hornell) played a through ball in to Browe past two defenders. Browe made a nice run to the ball and finished in the 28th minute for a 2-0 lead.

A persistent attack kept peppering the Express (0-2, 0-1 NEAC) with shots, and eventually, the Green and Gold broke through for a third tally in the opening half.

Browe hit the post with her blast in the 35th minute, but she scored seconds later off a service from junior Hannah Dalle (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia). Browe headed in the shot for a 3-0 lead with 10:23 remaining in the first half.

Wells got on the board on Madison Maloney's goal in the 64th minute, but the Wolfpack defense held strong and maintained the lead. A big swing in momentum came in the 75th minute, when Kosinski stopped a penalty shot from Shannon Blanford, one of her three second-half saves.

With the clock winding down, Hartman capped the scoring when she dribbled past the entire Wells defense and ripped a shot from outside the box into the top left corner of the goal with 16 seconds remaining.

The Wolfpack host Cazenovia College at 5 p.m. Wednesday night at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex. The Keuka College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is planning a Green Out for the game, with all fans encouraged to wear their green Wolfpack gear to the contest.
