Women's Lax Advances into NEAC Championship

Box Score

The Keuka College women's lacrosse team has won its last 21 games against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foes, and thanks to the latest victory over a conference opponent, the Storm are heading back to the NEAC championship.

Freshman Sydney Forshay (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) scored a career-high five goals while senior Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) equaled her season-high with nine points (two goals, seven assists) as the top-seeded Storm (15-2) vanquished fourth-seeded Cazenovia College (9-8) 21-6 Saturday afternoon.

Junior Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) added three goals with three assists while seniors Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) and junior Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) each scored three goals to power the defending conference champions from Keuka College.

Freshman Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) added two goals with three caused turnovers in the win as the Storm scored a season-most 21 goals.

The Storm advanced to face No. 2 Morrisville State (12-6) in the NEAC championship at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Penn Yan Academy.

"We're a very unselfish team, so (what has helped us) be successful has been seeing the open cutters and making great passes to our open cutters," said Forshay, who has scored at least one goal in the Storm's last 13 games.

"We know how well we play when we play together. If we're going to win another NEAC championship, it's going to take hard work. We need to start right from the beginning, from the first draw, we need to come play hard and put one in early."

Senior Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) made four saves for the win. Smith won eight draw controls, had three groundballs and caused three turnovers while Maguire won five draw controls and caused two turnovers.

Junior Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) caused three turnovers and collected three groundballs, while Bonafede and freshman Taylor Willsey (Mexico, NY/Mexico) each caused two turnovers in the semifinals.

Forshay staked the Storm to a 1-0 lead 2:21 into the contest, but Hannah Delaware evened the score with an unassisted tally five minutes in.

Maguire, Forshay, Bonafede and Smith each added goals less than three minutes apart for a 5-1 lead, but the Wildcats scored three of the next four goals to close within 6-4 halfway through the first half.

Following a timeout, the Storm came out refocused and held Cazenovia to just two goals over the final 45 minutes to win.

The defense was keyed by Hudson, Maguire, Willsey, junior Anna Patton (Newark, NY/Newark) and freshman Maura Gosson (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus).

"To earn another NEAC title would mean a lot to me and to the rest of this team," Forshay said. "My high school team wasn't all that great, so coming to a winning team like this is a lot of fun. Our defense is playing really well right now."
