Women's Lax Knocks Off Rival Morrisville St.

Box Score

Senior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored four goals while junior Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) had three goals and classmate Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added a pair of goals to power the Keuka College women's lacrosse team to a 14-6 win over rival Morrisville State Sunday at Penn Yan Academy.

Freshman Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) added one goal with two assists and classmate Sydney Forshay (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) had a goal and an assist as the Storm (6-2, 2-0 NEAC) won their fourth straight.

Smith also won seven draw controls and had four groundballs, Bruno collected six groundballs while Maguire had four groundballs as Keuka enjoyed a 27-21 edge in groundballs.

Senior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) and junior Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) each scored a goal and added three groundballs while Smith and Hudson each caused four turnovers to lift the Storm to their sixth win in eight all-time meetings with the Mustangs (5-4, 2-1 NEAC).

Senior Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) made four saves for the win.

"This is a confidence booster for us, we didn't play as well as a team yesterday (in a win over Cazenovia), but today we played a great game on defense and offense," said Smith, who recently broke the school record for career groundballs and currently has 181 groundballs.

"We were clicking and I think this is a good step in the right direction heading into next weekend's conference games."

Shelby Wood staked the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead on a free-position goal 2:33 into the contest, but Maguire evened the score on an unassisted tally five minutes later.

Morrisville State took its last lead of the day on Hunter Waldeau's free-position goal halfway through the first half, but the Green and Gold responded with an 8-0 run to seize control.

Smith scored twice while Bruno added a free-position score and Hudson, Forshay, Maguire, Arancio and senior Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) each added goals during the run.

Arancio capped the spurt with an unassisted goal just 13 seconds into the second half to give the Storm a 9-2 lead.

Waldeau scored twice and Kolleen Brown added a goal as the Mustangs closed within 9-5 with 23:58 remaining, but Smith and Burt each scored twice and Maguire added a goal to clinch the win for the Green and Gold.

"We have a lot of options on our offense. We're very versatile and that definitely gives us an edge over our opponents," Smith said.

"That's one of the best things about our team, everyone can score. We don't try to make one person our best player because if the other team shuts that player down, we need to use our other players who are open. This is one of the strongest teams we've had in the four years I've been a part of the team."

The Storm continue their four-game homestand with a pair of NEAC clashes this weekend. Keuka also hosts Lancaster Bible College at 1 p.m. Saturday and Wilson (Pa.) College at 1 p.m. Sunday during the homestand.
