Women's Lax Wins NEAC Opener Over Caz

Senior Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored nine points on four goals with five assists and seniors Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) each added four goals to power the Keuka College women's lacrosse team to a 16-5 win over Cazenovia Saturday afternoon at Penn Yan Academy.

Junior Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) added two goals with one assist and won six draw controls while Smith won three draw controls to lift the Storm (5-2, 1-0 NEAC) in their conference opener.

Freshmen Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) and Sydney Forshay (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) each added goals for Keuka, which led 11-2 at halftime.

Smith scooped up 10 groundballs and caused seven turnovers while Maguire had six groundballs and Bruno had four groundballs for Keuka, which enjoyed a 37-25 edge in groundballs.

The Storm won 15 of the 23 groundballs in besting Cazenovia for the eighth straight time.

Arancio put Keuka up 1-0 57 seconds in, but Kaitlin Sheppard pulled the Wildcats (1-6, 0-2 NEAC) even one minute later, but Maguire started the Storm on a 9-0 run with her free-positions tally with 23:15 remaining in the opening half.

Bonafede scored three goals, Maguire and Arancio had two goals and Smith and Bruno each added goals during the run as the Storm took a 10-1 lead on Bonafede's tally with 54 seconds remaining in the opening half.

Jessica Cramer scored for the Wildcats with 30 seconds remaining before halftime, but Smith scored on the free position with five seconds left to send the Storm into halftime with a nine-goal lead.

Cazenovia pulled within 12-5 on a score from Sheppard with 14:33 remaining in the second, but Keuka scored the last four goals to earn the win. Smith scored twice, including a man-up goal, and Bonafede and Arancio each added goals during the run for the Green and Gold.

The Storm continue their four-game homestand with a noon conference clash against Morrisville State Sunday afternoon at Penn Yan Academy. Keuka also hosts Lancaster Bible College (April 12) and Wilson College (April 13) during the homestand.
