Taylor Smith Breaks Career Goals Mark in Win

Box Score

Senior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored three goals and became Keuka College's career leader in goals scored as the Keuka College women's lacrosse team blanked Wells College 19-0 Tuesday evening at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Smith, a three-time All-North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) midfielder, broke Brandy Shafer's (2008-11) previous school record when she bounced a goal in from in front of the goal with 19 minutes and 37 seconds remaining in the first half.

Smith also won 12 draw controls and collected three groundballs to help the Storm (11-2, 7-0 NEAC) remain perfect in conference play.

"Having this record feels pretty good. My freshman year, we had a lot of talented seniors and I kind of took a back seat. I was so timid and afraid, but coach (Kelly Lickert-Orr) told me I need to step up and I started to score a lot my sophomore and junior years," said Smith, who now has 182 career goals.

"The closer I got to the record, the more I tried not to think about it and just play my game. But it's nice to know that after four years, my hard work has paid off. It was really nice breaking the record at home, I really wanted to do this at home and I'm really proud of this moment."

Smith was one of four student-athletes with three goals against the Express (3-7, 3-4 NEAC). Senior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton), junior Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) and freshman Sydney Forshay (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) each scored three goals for the Storm, who led 9-0 11 minutes into the contest, and took a 13-0 lead into halftime.

Senior Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) added two goals with four assists while freshman Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse) added two goals with three assists to lead the Green and Gold.

Junior Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added two goals while sophomore Samantha Staino (Brockport, NY/Brockport) had a goal, and Arancio and Forshay also had assists in the win, the Storm's 18th straight NEAC triumph.

Keuka College won 18 of the 20 draw controls.

The defense was led by Maguire, juniors Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) and Anna Patton (Newark, NY/Newark) and freshmen Taylor Willsey (Mexico, NY/Mexico) and Maura Gosson (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus).

Senior Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) started and played the first half while freshman Samantha Peacock (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) played the second half. Neither allowed a goal as the Storm held the Express without a shot on goal.

The Storm travel to Medaille College for a 4:30 p.m. NEAC clash Saturday afternoon before traveling to SUNYIT (Sunday) and Utica College (April 30) to close out the regular season.

"We have some good teams coming up with Medaille, SUNYIT and Utica, and we're starting to learn to control the ball a lot more and we're doing great winning the draw controls," Smith said. "Our draw control system between Kaycee Maguire and myself, and having Jenn Burt on the circle boxing out, we're able to switch in and out and do great at the draw controls."
