Softball Bats Stay Hot in Sweep of Wells College

Senior Jill Hart (Cowlesville, NY/Iroquois) was 4-for-7 with seven RBI, freshman Samantha Blum (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie) was 4-for-6 with five RBI and the Keuka College softball team extended its win streak to 10 games with Saturday's sweep of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival Wells College.

The Storm (11-5, 11-1 NEAC) defeated the Express (1-11, 1-11) in five innings in both games, prevailing 10-2 and 16-0.

Sophomore Mackenzie Cole (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg Free Academy) finished was 3-for-5 with five runs scored and three RBI while senior Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) and sophomore Liz Warren (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas A. Edison) each pitched complete-game gems to power the Storm.

Gravel improved to 5-3 by holding the Express to two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in the complete-game win.

Warren ran her record to 6-2, winning her fifth straight decision after surrendering no runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in game two. 

Hart smacked a two-run, inside-the-park home run and finished 2-for-3 with three RBI while sophomore Ally Muller (Bath, NY/Haverling) was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the first game.

Senior Deliane Lessard (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Cole was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Blum was 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored in game one.

Muller was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Hart was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in the win.

The Storm struck for three runs in the first. Cole and Lessard led off the inning with singles, and Muller plated Cole on an RBI groundout for a 1-0 lead.

Hart, the next batter, then smacked a two-run, inside-the-park home run as the Green and Gold led 3-0 after one inning.

Keuka tacked on two more runs in the second, pushing across one unearned run before Lessard added an RBI single for a 5-0 lead.

Lindsay Achzet hit a two-run home run in the fourth to get the Express on the board, but Keuka College retaliated with five runs in the bottom of the inning.

With runners on first and second and two outs, Blum sparked a five-run inning with an RBI double and Muller added a two-run single to center field. Hart added an RBI double to complete the scoring as the Storm used the mercy rule to win in five innings.

In the nightcap, Blum was 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored, Hart was 2-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored and Cole was 1-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored for the Storm.

Sophomore Jessica Parmiter (Cortland, NY/Homer) was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Warren was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Green and Gold swept their fifth straight NEAC series.

Blum had a two-run single, Hart added a two-run triple and Warren had an RBI single as the Storm scored five first-inning runs. Hart and Parmiter added RBI singles in the second, and the Storm scored nine runs in the third to take control for good.

Blum's triple to left field plated two runs, Hart added an RBI on a fielder's choice groundout, Parmiter had an RBI single and sophomore Nicole Wright (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) drove in a run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Cole then cleared the bases when she laced a double to center field, and freshman Brittany Massi (Auburn, NY/Port Byron) put the Storm up 16-0 on an RBI single into left field.

Warren struck out two batters in the first and retired five of the first seven batters on strikeouts.

The Storm travel to Cazenovia College for a NEAC doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday before traveling to rival SUNYIT for a conference doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The Green and Gold then host SUNY Cobleskill Saturday afternoon and SUNYIT Sunday afternoon to close out the conference portion of the schedule.
