Women's Lax Falls to Clarkson in Opener

Box Score

Senior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored four goals and classmate Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) added two goals with two assists, but the Keuka College women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener, 10-8 to Clarkson University Saturday at Penn Yan Academy in Penn Yan, N.Y.

Juniors Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) each added a goal while senior Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) made seven saves in her first start in goal for the Storm (0-1).

Smith also grabbed 5 groundballs, won 2 draw controls and caused 2 turnovers while Burt and Maguire collected four groundballs each for Keuka, the defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason champions.

"I was really impressed with how well we played collectively today," said Kelly Lickert-Orr, Keuka's fourth-year head coach.

"Our defense was on point throughout the game. We were causing turnovers and mistakes and our midfield transition worked well today. To get out here and put on that type of performance, given how little we've been able to get outside this year, it really excites me. We have a lot of positive things to build off of."

Keuka trailed 3-1 after Paige Fayette (four goals) scored on a free position shot with 13:27 remaining in the opening half, but the Storm rattled off four unanswered goals to take a 5-3 halftime lead.

Smith and Bonafede each scored twice in the final 10:44 of the opening half to give the Storm the lead heading into halftime.

Christine Wright trimmed the Storm lead to 5-4, but Burt's unassisted tally gave Keuka a two-goal lead. Wright scored again to pull the Golden Knights (1-0) within 6-5 30 seconds later, before Smith scored for a 7-5 lead with 24:26 to play.

Emma Oliver scored back-to-back goals to knot the score at 7 with 17:54 remaining before Maguire gave the Storm their final lead, 8-7 off a feed from senior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) with 17:26 remaining.

Neither team scored again until Fayette evened the score with 9:52 remaining, and Clarkson tacked on a pair of goals to beat the Storm for the second straight year. Keuka fell to Clarkson 13-3 on March 17, 2013.

The Storm welcome Alfred University for a non-conference clash at 4 p.m. March 19.
