Bonafede Breaks Career Points Mark in Loss to Adrian

Box Score

Senior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) matched her season-high with four goals and junior Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) equaled her career-high with eight groundballs, but the Keuka College women's lacrosse team fell to Adrian (Mich.) College 12-7 Friday afternoon in Adrian, Mich.

Senior Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) added an assist and became Keuka's all-time points leader with 221 points (a school-record 142 assists and 79 goals), breaking Brandy Shafer's (2008-11) previous mark of 220 points.

Smith and Maguire each caused three turnovers while Smith won two draw controls for the Storm (2-2).

Senior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton), junior Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and freshman Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) each added goals for the Green and Gold.

Senior Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) stopped five shots in the loss, which snapped Keuka's two-game win streak.

In a matchup of two squads that qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament in 2013, Adrian struck first 3:27 into the opening half, but Smith tied the score 45 seconds later on an unassisted tally.

Adrian scored three unanswered goals while holding Keuka scoreless for a span of 13:44 to take a 4-1 lead before Smith ended the drought on a goal with 12:04 remaining in the first half. Bonafede fed Smith for her tally and, in the process, became Keuka's all-time leader in points scored.

Hannah Early (five goals) scored three goals in a span of 4:24 to put the Bulldogs up 7-2 before Smith scored her third goal of the half as Keuka went into halftime trailing 7-3.

Arancio scored 4:13 into the second half and Smith scored on a free-position shot to pull the Green and Gold within 7-5, and after Early scored another goal, Burt responded with an unassisted tally to slice the deficit to 8-6 with 15:54 to play.

But Adrian scored the next four goals and held on for its second straight win over Keuka.

Keuka continues its Michigan trip with a 1 p.m. non-conference clash Saturday with Kalamazoo College.
