Stingy D Leads Women's Lax Past Hartwick

The Keuka College women's lacrosse team trailed 5-3 late in the first half of Wednesday afternoon's non-conference clash with Hartwick College, but the Storm outscored the Hawks 6-0 and held Hartwick scoreless for the final 34 minutes to earn a 9-5 win in Oneonta, N.Y.

Junior Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored a season-high five points on four goals with an assist while senior Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) handed out four assists as the Storm (2-1) won their second straight.

Senior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) had an all-around balanced game with two goals and an assist, and she also collected five groundballs, won four draw controls and caused three turnovers.

Junior Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) added two goals, three groundballs and two draw control wins, senior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) had a goal and freshman Taylor Willsey (Mexico, NY/Mexico) collected three groundballs for Keuka.

Senior Korie Fitzgerald (Vestal, NY/Vestal) stopped six shots and added three groundballs for the Storm.

Keuka and Hartwick (2-3) traded goals over the first 12 minutes, and the score was knotted at three with 17:48 remaining in the opening half after tallies from Burt, Smith and Arancio.

Bonafede assisted on the last two goals, but the Storm were held scoreless for the rest of the half while Hartwick tacked on two goals in a span of 4:10 to take a 5-3 halftime lead.

But the Green and Gold's defense clamped down and held the Hawks scoreless for the final 33 minutes and 48 seconds to earn the win.

Maguire, Willsey, juniors Anna Patton (Newark, NY/Newark) and Maggie Mercurio (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and freshman Maura Gosson (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) led the defensive charge for the stingy Storm.

Burt scored three goals, Maguire had two tallies and Smith added a score as the Storm used a 6-0 run to close out Hartwick.

Keuka heads to Michigan to take on Adrian College and Kalamazoo College on Friday and Saturday. Both games are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Keuka and Adrian each made the NCAA Division III tournament, with the Storm suffering an 11-10 loss to the Bulldogs on March 29, 2013.
