Cardiac Keuka Rallies for Thrilling OT Win

Box Score

Rallying from a late-game deficit to pull out a win in overtime is becoming the norm for the Keuka College men's lacrosse team.

For the third time in four games, the Storm faced a deficit in the final two minutes of regulation. And for the third time, the Green and Gold were able to rally and pull out an overtime win.

Junior James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) netted the winner in overtime as the Storm remained undefeated with an 11-10 triumph over Alfred University Saturday at Penn Yan Academy in Penn Yan, N.Y.

Voigt ripped home a shot that settled into the top of the goal 1:42 into the overtime session as the Storm (4-0) rallied late to win.

Voigt finished with four goals and one assist, sophomore Matt Beebe (Syracuse, NY/LaFayette) added two goals and an assist and junior Derek Pfeiffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) had one goal and two assists for Keuka.

The Storm led 9-5 early in the fourth quarter, but were outscored 5-0 over a span of 10:29 as the Saxons (2-3) took a 10-9 lead on Brett Carroll's goal with 53 seconds in regulation.

After winning the ensuing faceoff, senior Nick Judge (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) set up Beebe for the game-tying goal with 39 seconds left in regulation.

Neither team was able to score down the stretch, and both teams were held scoreless until Voigt's game-winner sent the Storm home victorious in their home opener.

"We had to scrap today, we didn't play to our potential but we have a good group of tough guys who come out to work every day," said Voigt, who now has 14 points on nine goals and five assists.

"These guys know how to win, and that's what we do. All of the guys, we collected ourselves on the sidelines after they made their run and we knew what we needed to go. We never gave up. I have a lot of faith in my teammates; these guys all know how to play and we've all been down in games and come back for the win. We've done it a couple of times this year."

Judge finished with a goal and an assist while junior Marc Sacco (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa), sophomore Brendan King (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and freshman Jamie Kuppel (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each added goals for the Green and Gold.

Junior Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) made nine saves to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Sacco and senior Kenny Cannon (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) each collected seven groundballs while freshman Trevor Jones (Jamesville, NY/LaFayette) added five groundballs for Keuka, which enjoyed a 45-30 edge in groundballs.

Sacco also caused four turnovers while senior Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and freshman Dustin Springer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each caused three turnovers for Keuka.

The Storm held Alfred scoreless for more than 22 minutes in taking a 5-2 halftime lead. Voigt scored a goal and added an assist while Beebe, Judge, King and Pfeiffer each added first-half goals for the Green and Gold.

Alfred pulled within 5-3 on Brendan Sullivan's tally 2:25 into the third, but Sacco answered with a goal to give the Storm a 6-3 lead.

The Saxons scored two straight to make it a one-goal game before Voigt tallied a pair of man-up goals to give Keuka an 8-5 lead early in the fourth.

Kuppel added an unassisted tally as Keuka took a 9-5 lead with 11:22 remaining in regulation before the Saxons went on their 5-0 run.

Keuka hosts Wells College at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Penn Yan Academy in the Storm's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener. The Storm are the three-time defending NEAC postseason champions.

"This game was a good indicator of what the NEAC will be like," Voigt said. "Those are tough games and today's game should definitely prepare us for the mental toughness we're going to need in conference games."
