Beebe's OT Goal Lifts Men's Lax in Opener

Box Score

Sophomore Matt Beebe (Syracuse, NY/LaFayette) scored all of two goals during his freshman campaign for the Keuka College men's lacrosse team.

The attacker needed less than two quarters to surpass that total during Saturday's 2014 season opener against Emmanuel (Mass.) College, and thanks to a career-high scoring effort and the stout goaltending play of junior Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), the Storm picked up a thrilling, 13-12 overtime win over Emmanuel in Boston, Mass.

Beebe scored six goals with one assist, senior Connor Latimer (Whitby, Ont./Father Leo J. Austin) added five assists and Saltrelli stopped a career-high 24 shots to spark the Storm (1-0), the three-time defending champions of the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Dating back to last year, it was the 13th straight victory for Keuka.

Juniors James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and Cory Gray (Seneca Castle, NY/Midlakes) and freshman Jamie Kuppel (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each added two goals for Keuka, which trailed 10-7 and 12-10 before Beebe and Kuppel scored twice in the last minute of regulation to force overtime.

In the extra session, it took Keuka only 33 seconds to record the winner. Latimer found Beebe for his sixth and final goal to lift the Storm to a season-opening win.

Senior Kenny Cannon (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) scooped up seven groundballs and Saltrelli and senior Zachary Koczent (Geneva, NY/Geneva) each added four groundballs while Koczent won 60 percent of his faceoffs (12 of 20) to lead the Green and Gold.

Senior Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and freshman Dustin Springer (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) each caused three turnovers to lead the Storm defense. Springer added a goal for Keuka, which had nine assists on 13 goals.

Keuka took a 6-4 lead into halftime, but Emmanuel (0-1) scored three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead with 10:25 remaining in the third quarter. Gray scored to tie the score at 7, but Emmanuel closed out the quarter with three straight tallies and led 10-7 heading into the fourth.

Voigt scored twice and Beebe added a goal as Keuka scored three times in the first six minutes of the final quarter to pull even at 10.

Emmanuel responded with two straight scores before Beebe and Kuppel scored in the closing minute to force overtime.

Keuka is on the road for a 3 p.m. non-conference clash against Empire 8 rival Elmira College on Saturday before traveling to The College at Brockport for a 1 p.m. showdown March 15.

The Storm's home opener is at 2 p.m. March 22 against Alfred University.
