Defense Dominates as Men's Lax Rolls Hilbert

Box Score

Junior Connor Latimer (Whitby, ON/Genesee Community College) scored four goals with three assists and sophomore Derek Pfeiffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) added three goals for Keuka College's men's lacrosse team, but the real story behind Wednesday night's 14-1 win over Hilbert College was the Storm's stout defense.

Leading 2-1 with 7:51 remaining in the opening quarter, the Green and Gold (4-1, 2-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference) blanked the Hawks (4-3, 1-1) over the final 53 minutes to pick up their fourth straight win at Penn Yan Academy.

Junior Brandon DeCaire (LaFayette, NY/LaFayette) caused five of Hilbert's 23 turnovers while juniors Scott Miller (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and Kenny Cannon (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) and sophomores Stephen Ruggles (Corning, NY/Corning) and Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) each caused two turnovers to spark the Storm.

Sophomore Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) stopped seven shots to improve to 4-1 for Keuka, which outshot Hilbert 34-21 and scooped up 41 groundballs to 33 for the Hawks.

Cannon finished with seven groundballs while senior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton), who scored two goals with three assists, added six groundballs for the Green and Gold.

Sophomore James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) and Luppino each added two goals and one assist while Voigt collected four groundballs for Keuka. Junior Justin Strain (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) added five groundballs and caused a turnover while junior Zachary Koczent (Geneva, NY/Geneva) was 9-for-16 on faceoffs and collected four groundballs in the win.

Pfeiffer scored twice just 16 seconds apart, including a man-up tally off a feed from Crumlish as the Storm took a 2-0 lead with 11:30 remaining in the opening quarter.

John Pingitore got Hilbert on the board with a man-up goal with 7:51 remaining in the first, but that would be the last time the Hawks would score. Voigt scored twice and Crumlish had back-to-back goals late in the quarter as Keuka took a 5-1 lead into the second.

Luppino extended the lead to five after scoring off a feed from Latimer 70 seconds into the second, and Voigt found a cutting Gray for Keuka's seventh goal with 9:23 remaining in the half. Latimer tacked on two more goals in the final two minutes as Keuka took a 9-1 lead into halftime and breezed to its fourth straight win.

With the win, the Storm improve to 3-0 all-time against Hilbert and have won their last nine NEAC contests.
