Box Score Junior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) equaled her career-high with six goals and classmate Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) set a career-high with 10 points as the Keuka College women's lacrosse team clinched the North Eastern Athletic Conference's (NEAC) regular season championship with an 18-11 win over Morrisville State Sunday in Morrisville, N.Y.
Bonafede finished with four goals and six assists as she completed the regular season scoring 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) in the Storm's (11-3, 9-0 NEAC) two wins over Cazenovia and Morrisville to secure the conference championship.
"We transitioned the ball really well, our attack rode and caused turnovers. Defense stepped up and crashed really well on ball," said Kelly Lickert, Keuka's third-year coach who has compiled a 34-7 mark on campus.
"Overall I'm very proud of how we have come together over the last few weeks. We had a big turnaround after spring break and started to click."
Smith scored six goals for the second straight game and has scored five or more goals in nine of Keuka's 14 contests, while Bonafede has tallied six or more points in nine of the last 10 games for the Green and Gold. Bonafede (24G, 55 A) broke her own record for assists in a season and trails only Brandy Shafer (2010) for most points in a season (93).
Keuka will now host the NEAC postseason tournament this Saturday and Sunday. Keuka will face either Cazenovia (8-7, 5-4) or SUNYIT (6-9, 5-4) in one semifinal at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, with No. 2 Morrisville State taking on No. 3 Medaille (9-3, 6-2) at 2 p.m. in the other semifinal. Keuka handed IT a 19-4 setback on April 21.
The two winners would square off at Keuka at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon for the NEAC's championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
Sophomore Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added three goals and one assist, senior Sam Layton (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) totaled three goals while junior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) added two goals for the Storm.
Sophomore Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) had two assists, Smith won seven draw controls and added six groundballs while senior Courtney French (Massena, NY/Massena) collected six groundballs and won four draw controls to help Keuka complete the undefeated season against NEAC opponents.
Sophomore Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) collected five groundballs, won two draw controls and caused two turnovers while Smith, Layton, Maguire, French, Hudson and sophomore Ashley Swarts (Arkport, NY/Arkport) each caused two turnovers in the win.
Smith scored the Storm's first three goals during a span of 4:57, but Shelby Wood responded with back-to-back goals to pull the Mustangs (9-6, 8-1) within 3-2.
Bonafede then fed Layton and Burt to put the Storm up 5-2, and following a Cassie Edmondson tally, Keuka responded with a 6-0 run to seize control. Burt and Smith scored twice while Arancio and Bonafede added goals during the run as the Storm led 11-3 just 14 seconds into the second half.
Following a Morrisville goal, Layton had a goal and Bonafede scored twice, the last on a free-position shot with 22:57 remaining for a 14-4 lead.
The Mustangs never got closer than seven goals the rest of the way, and Keuka would hang on to clinch the regular-season championship.
