Softball Wraps Up NEAC North Title

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Juniors Brooke Lovell (Arkport, NY/Arkport) and Deliane Lessard (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) each drove in two runs as the Keuka College softball team won game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Morrisville State, 7-5.

But Keuka (15-9, 15-5 NEAC) was held to just three hits in the nightcap and managed a split with the Mustangs, dropping game two 3-2.

With the win, the Storm, the six-time defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champions, were able to clinch the NEAC North Division's regular season championship.

After traveling to Ithaca College Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader, Keuka will travel to Penn State-Berks, the No. 1 seed from the South Division, for the upcoming NEAC postseason tournament, which runs Friday through Sunday. The winner earns the NEAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Green and Gold scored all seven of their runs in the first three innings of game one. Lovell drove in two with an RBI single, junior Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) added an RBI triple and freshman Jessica Parmiter (Cortland, NY/Homer) gave Keuka a 4-0 lead with an RBI single.

In the second, sophomore Kelly Proper (Silver Springs, NY/Letchworth) extended the lead to 5-0 on an RBI triple before the Mustangs (6-20, 6-14) got two runs back in the bottom of the inning.

The Storm staged a two-out rally in the third, scoring two runs on Lessard's double to take a 7-2 lead. Morrisville pushed across one run in the fifth and two more in the seventh, but Gravel was able to limit the damage and improve to 8-4 on the year. She surrendered five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts in the complete game win, her seventh straight victory.

Keuka had 10 hits in the win as every starter recorded at least one hit.

In game two, Jenna D'Ercole held Keuka to just one earned run on three hits. Lessard went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and Proper singled, but that was all the damage the Storm could do off of D'Ercole, who struck out eight and issued only one walk.

Morrisville took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and the score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth. Sophomore Marriah Gough (Oneida, NY/Stockbridge Valley) reached on an error, junior Montana McDonald (Romulus, NY/Romulus) coaxed a walk and both scored on Lessard's RBI single.

But the Mustangs reclaimed the lead in the sixth when Tiffany Burks launched a solo home run and the Storm were unable to answer in the top of the seventh.

Freshman Liz Warren (Elmira Heights, NY/Thomas Edison) allowed three runs on three hits with five strikeouts in the hard-luck loss. She falls to 7-5 on the year.

Keuka returns to action with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Ithaca College. Live stats available at http://sidearmstats.com/ithaca/softball/scoreboard.aspx. On Wednesday, Keuka hosts Alfred University in a non-conference doubleheader, also starting at 3 p.m.
