Women's Lax Topples Medaille

Box Score

The Keuka College women's lacrosse team used a 6-1 run to open the second half of Saturday's matchup of undefeated schools in the North Eastern Athletic Conference as the Storm remained perfect in conference play with a 16-6 win over the Medaille College Mavericks.

Junior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored six goals while classmate Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) added one goal with five assists to power the Storm (8-2, 6-0 NEAC) past the Mavericks (7-2, 4-1) on Parents' Day at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Junior Caroline Arancio (Clinton, NY/Clinton) added two goals and an assist while sophomores Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) and Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) each scored twice as Keuka won its sixth straight while snapping Medaille's seven-game win streak.

"We had a lot of nerves coming in, just because they were 7-1 and we were 7-2, so this was a make-or-break game for us and we came out determined to win and we did," Bonafede said.

"We just played as one. We struggled with that in the beginning of the year, but these last couple of games we've really turned it on."

It was Smith's sixth game this year with five or more goals, and Bonafede's sixth straight game with six or more points.

Smith and Maguire each won five draw controls while Maguire had six groundballs and Bonafede and sophomore Ashley Swarts (Arkport, NY/Arkport) each scooped up four groundballs for the Green and Gold.

Freshman Samantha Staino (Brockport, NY/Brockport) added a goal and an assist while senior Sam Layton (Painted Post, NY/Corning West) and junior Meghan Storie (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) added goals to round out the scoring for the Storm.

Smith put Keuka up 1-0 on a free-position goal 3:04 into the contest before Brittney Rowland tied the score 25 seconds later. Arancio and Maguire each tallied goals for a 3-1 lead before Medaille's Emily Brophy scored a man-up goal to slice it to 3-2.

Layton, Smith and Bonafede each scored for a 6-2 lead, but back-to-back goals from Katie Botsford and Brophy pulled Medaille within 6-4 with 2:43 remaining in the opening half.

Bonafede fed Arancio for a transition goal to jump-start the 6-1 run as Keuka turned a 6-4 lead into an 12-5 edge, capped by Hudson's tally with 16:07 remaining.

"Being able to communicate was the biggest thing today, especially with that wind," Arancio said. "We were all so pumped up before the game and it really makes a difference when we're pumped up to play. Everyone stepped up for us today.

Brophy scored the last of her three goals to pull the Mavericks within 12-6 halfway through the second, but Smith scored twice and Staino and Hudson added goals to close out Medaille.

Senior Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) made five saves to improve to 8-2.

Keuka took 27 shots to 13 for Medaille, had a 29-22 edge in groundballs and won 14 of 22 draw controls.

Keuka hosts SUNYIT at 1 p.m. Sunday on Senior Day. Layton, Hogan, Courtney French (Massena, NY/Massena) and Sarah Hillman (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) will be honored for their years of hard work and dedication to the program.
