Late Goal Sinks Women's Lax

Box Score

The Keuka College women's lacrosse team took a four-goal lead halfway through the second half of Friday's non-conference clash with perennial power Adrian (Mich.) College, but the Storm suffered an 11-10 setback at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.

Junior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored four goals, classmate Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) added one goal and four assists and sophomore Jennifer Burt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) scored three goals in the loss for the Green and Gold (2-2).

Sophomore Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) added two goals and one assist and Bonafede caused three turnovers for the Storm, who forced Adrian (7-2) into 15 turnovers.

Maguire capped a 4-0 run with an even-strength goal off a feed from Bonafede for a 9-5 lead with 19:23 remaining, but the Bulldogs outscored Keuka 6-1 over the final 19:23 to earn the win.

Adrian scored four straight goals during a span of 10:27 to tie the score at 9, but Burt put Keuka up by one when she ran towards the cage and fired a shot into the lower-right corner of the goal with 3:55 remaining.

The lead would be short-lived, as Stacey Birlson (four goals, three assists) scored twice in the final three minutes. Her first goal tied the score at 10 with 2:57 remaining, then following a Keuka turnover, Birlson picked up a groundball and beat senior goalie Molly Hogan (Horseheads, NY/Horesheads) for the winner with 30 seconds remaining.

The Storm won the ensuing draw control, but Bonafede missed wide with seven seconds left as Adrian hung on for the win.

Adrian took an early 1-0 lead before Smith scored back-to-back goals for a 2-1 lead. Adrian responded with two straight tallies before Smith, Maguire and Burt all scored five minutes apart to stake the Storm to a 5-3 lead with 6:58 left in the opening half.

The Storm took a 5-4 lead into halftime, and neither squad scored during the first six minutes of the second, until Cassie Hoyez scored with 23:09 remaining to knot the score at 5.

Bonafede gave Keuka a 6-5 lead on her unassisted goal with 22:02 remaining, and 1:11 later, Smith scored her 16th goal of the season for a two-goal edge.

Forty-five seconds later, Burt extended the lead to three on an unassisted goal, and Maguire capped the 4-0 run by taking a feed from Bonafede and scoring with 19:23 remaining.

Just 20 seconds later, Hoyez scored to start Adrian's pivotal 6-1 run as the Bulldogs handed Keuka its first home loss of the season.

Hogan made 11 saves, Maguire and sophomore Ashley Swarts (Arkport, NY/Arkport) each scooped up four groundballs while Hogan and sophomore Olivia Hudson (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) each had three groundballs for the Storm.

Keuka is off until traveling to Lancaster Bible College for its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener at 1 p.m. April 6.
