Women's Lax Falls to Clarkson

Box Score

Junior Taylor Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) scored two goals and scooped up five groundballs while classmate Maggie Bonafede (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) added a first-half goal, but Keuka College's women's lacrosse team suffered a 13-3 non-conference loss to Clarkson University Sunday afternoon in Potsdam, NY.

Clarkson (3-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after scoring four times in the first 11 minutes and seven seconds, but the Storm (1-1) clamped down and held the Golden Knights scoreless for nearly 19 minutes of the opening half.

Smith, who matched her career-high with five goals during Saturday's 12-7 win over SUNY Canton, got the Green and Gold on the scoreboard with an unassisted tally with 11:52 remaining in the first.

Neither team scored over the next eight minutes until Bonafede found the net unassisted with 3:20 remaining. A stout Storm defense continued to deny the Golden Knights until freshman Christine Wright (five goals) sent Clarkson into halftime up 5-2 with an unassisted goal with six seconds left before halftime.

Clarkson scored the first six goals of the second half to seize control. Smith's second goal of the contest, an even-strength tally, pulled Keuka within 11-3 with 4:25 remaining, but the Storm fell, earning a split on opening weekend.

Smith and sophomore Kaycee Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) each caused two turnovers for Keuka, which was outshot 23-17 and committed 24 turnovers while causing 20 Clarkson turnovers.

The Green and Gold's home opener is against Hartwick College at 4:30 p.m. March 27 before hosting Adrian College at 4 p.m. March 29.

Keuka handed Hartwick a 16-9 setback on March 27, 2012.
