Women's Soccer Rallies for Win

Box Score

Things haven't gone according to plans in the early going of the 2011 women's soccer season for the Keuka College Storm.

After graduating five starters and losing four members of the 2010 All-North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) squad, the Storm started slowly this year, going 0-2-1 through the first three games.

Maybe Sunday's dramatic win over the College of St. Elizabeth can help get Keuka's season back on track.

After surrendering a goal in the 75th minute, the Storm showed some major heart in rallying for a 2-1 win over its NEAC rivals. Junior Terin Brown (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) tied the game with her first goal of the season, outracing a defender and converting her shot into the left side of the goal with 4:50 remaining in regulation.

Following Brown's goal, the Storm (1-2-1, 1-1-1 NEAC) dictated the tempo of play during both the remainder of regulation and the overtime session. The score remained knotted at 1-all through the first 10-minute overtime period. In the second extra session, the Storm used some hustle and a little bit of luck to score the winner.

Sophomore Brooke Lovell (Arkport, NY/Arkport) made a chip from inside the midfield line that, after striking the artificial turf at St. Elizabeth's Soccer Center Stadium, took off and seemed destined to go out of bounds. But junior Sarah Capek (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) took off sprinting after Lovell's chip and tracked the ball down just outside of the 18-yard line.

Capek then settled herself and made an accurate pass to sophomore Stephanie Havens (Unadilla, NY/Unatego), who converted her one-touch shot into the far post for the game-winner. Keuka ended up enjoying an 18-4 edge in shots.

"This is definitely a huge win for us … to get down late in the game and then to come back and win was a huge step for this team," said Jamie Burke, Keuka's sixth-year head coach, of her young squad that features 10 new players.

"We could have given up and quit with five minutes left, but once we got Terin's goal, you could see the momentum change. We dominated in overtime and this is a huge confidence boost for us. The key was Sarah tracking down that ball; most people wouldn't have chased after that ball, but Sarah has so much heart and hustle not letting the ball get out of bounds."

After opening on the road for four straight contests, Keuka returns to action with a pair of home games this weekend, beginning with a 1 p.m. clash Saturday afternoon with Gallaudet University as part of the college's family weekend.

Before the women's game, the press box at the soccer and lacrosse field will be renamed in honor of Lyle P. Corey, the late president of Keuka College's sports booster club the Stormwatchers who passed away in August of 2010. Mr. Corey will also be inducted into Keuka's Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday afternoon.
